Iran-US

Talks between the US and Iran began today in Oman, albeit indirectly. Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaid is shuttling messages between the Iranian and American delegations. Iran is represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and the US is represented by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as well as CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper.

Pakistan

At least 31 are dead, and a further 169 are injured after a suicide bombing at an imambargah during Friday prayers in Islamabad. It is unclear which group is responsible for it as it could be the Balochistan Liberation Army or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, to name two. Pakistan’s defence minister blames the actions of both India and the Afghan Taliban.

Russia

Russia’s Deputy Chief of Military Intelligence, Vladimir Alekseyev, has been hospitalised after an unidentified individual shot at him multiple times. This was almost certainly a Ukrainian attempt to assassinate him, though no blame has been assigned at this time.

European intelligence agencies and space agencies warn that Russian satellites have been intercepting communications. Over the past three years, 17 satellites have been compromised by Russian space SIGINT. Two satellites have been the main culprits, Luch-1 (launched in 2014) and Luch-2 (launched in 2023).

Poland-US

After saying he would not support Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, Poland’s speaker of the lower house of parliament, Wlodzimierz Czarzasty, has been black listed by the US ambassador. Ambassador Tom Rose said he was cutting all contact with Czarzasty, saying his comments were “outrageous and unprovoked insults,” directed at Trump.

Nigeria

The Nigerian army has been deployed to Kwara state following the attack on Tuesday that killed at least 162 people. It is unclear who carried out the attack, but the government believes it was Boko Haram jihadists.  Nigeria has been cracking down on jihadists and bandits in the country recently.
