Iran
A group of hardline lawmakers in Iran are calling for a change in the defence posture of the nation, which would include the development of a nuclear bomb. Seventy members of the 290-member parliament have signed an open letter. Because the lawmakers cannot question the Supreme Leader’s decisions, the letter was addressed to members of the Supreme National Security Council.
Europe
NATO jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian spy plane that entered the Blatic Sea without filing a flight plan. The German delegation reported to NATO that two Eurofighters were tasked with the intercept. This comes as Russian aircraft and drones have been entering NATO airspace to provoke a response from the alliance by testing the waters of what Russia can get away with.
Denmark and Norway have closed down some of their airports due to drone sightings. Oslo police report that two foreign nationals were arrested for flying drones near the airport. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederisken states that the incidents should be viewed in the context of the recent cyberattacks against European countries.
UN
US President Trump is set to address the UN General Assembly today as the UN marks its 80th anniversary. Trump is expected to deliver a speech outlining how, in his view, globalist institutions have significantly eroded the world order.
Police in New York halted French President Macron as Trump’s motorcade took precedence. The French president phoned Trump to get through, with Trump reportedly saying, “Get out of the way.”
West Africa
The military juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced that they will immediately withdraw from the International Criminal Court. Out of the 33 cases brought to the ICC, all but one involved an African country. The three countries state that the ICC represents colonial repression and is unable to try crimes of genocide, war crimes, etc, effectively.
China
China has evacuated hundreds of thousands of people ahead of the imminent arrival of Super Typhoon Ragasa. At least 10 cities in Guangdong province have been ordered to shut their schools, where the storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday. Ragasa has been dubbed the “King of Storms” by China’s meteorological agency.
Reports filed with the United Nations show that China supplied over 100,000 barrels of refined petroleum products to North Korea within the first months of this year. In 2017, the United Nations Security Council limited North Korean petroleum imports to 500,000 barrels a year. Russia does not report its exports to North Korea, in violation of the UNSC’s mandatory reporting requirements.
US
President Trump on Monday signed an executive order designating Antifa as a terrorist organization. Trump’s order directs federal agencies to investigate and dismantle the “militarist, anarchist enterprise that explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States Government.”
