Ukraine
The Financial Times is reporting that the United States has told allies it is prepared to provide military assets and battlefield oversight, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, command and control, as well as aircraft and air defence assets, to enable any European-led peacekeeping mission and aerial defence shield on the ground and in the skies over Ukraine. The offer is contingent on commitments by European allies to deploy tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine.
Ukraine admits that Russian troops have entered the key region of Dnipropetrovsk and are attempting to establish a foothold. Dnipropetrovsk is an eastern industrial region of the country. Throughout the summer, Russia has claimed to have entered this region, but it now appears that there has been a minor incursion.
Greenland
The Danish government summoned the US charge d’affaires in the country over alleged attempts to interfere with the status of Greenland. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that “any attempt to interfere in the Kingdom’s internal affairs will obviously be unacceptable.” Danish intelligence services have reportedly uncovered a network of three American men involved in “influence operations” to drive a wedge between Denmark and Greenland and move the island into America’s orbit.
India
On Wednesday, a 50% tariff on Indian imports into the United States took effect. The high rate is punishment for India’s purchases of Russian oil, which have skyrocketed since the Ukraine war began, as India has snapped up oil that was previously sold to Europe.
In a gesture, one Indian oil firm, state-run Reliance Industries, is reducing its oil imports from Russia from 1.8 million barrels a day to 1.4 to 1.6 million barrels a day in October.
United States
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Tuesday that the Trump administration is considering taking stakes in defence contractors – including Lockheed Martin. Lutnick said Lockheed is “basically an arm of the US government” already. The Pentagon is weighing the moves but has not issued a statement.
Venezuela
Venezuela is deploying warships and drones as US destroyers approach. It has also been reported that Venezuela has deployed 15,000 troops to the Colombian border as two more US ships join an amphibious squadron. The purpose of the troop movement is to combat criminal groups, as the Minister of the Popular Power for Interior Diosdado Cabello claims that the Venezuelan government seized 53 tons of illicit drugs so far this year.
The US Coast Guard just offloaded over 76,000 pounds of illicit narcotics that it seized in 19 operations from 26 June to 18 August. Over 61,740 pounds of cocaine and 14,400 pounds of marijuana were seized, and it is estimated that the cocaine was enough to provide a fatal overdose to the entire population of Florida, 23 million.
Iran Pakistan
The Iranian and Pakistani Army Chiefs affirmed their commitment to combat terrorism on their 900-km shared border. Militant groups such as Jaish al-Adl and the Balochistan Liberation Army have long caused problems for Pakistan. Still, mutual issues, including terrorism, smuggling, and mutual accusations of harbouring militants, have strained relations.
Canada
Prime Minister Mark Carney was touring Latvia and visiting Canadian soldiers deployed there. During his visit, Carney announced that Canada would extend its mission in the country by several years, until 2029, if not renewed in the future. This wraps up Carney’s summer European tour.
