Iran Sanctions
The US Treasury Department on Thursday blacklisted Rizhao Shihua Crude Oil Terminal Co., alongside more than 50 individuals, firms and vessels involved in exporting Iranian energy in a crackdown on the Beijing-Tehran energy trade. The facility is linked to Sinopec and handles about 9% of China’s crude imports.
Peru
Peru’s Congress has voted to remove the deeply unpopular president, Dina Boluarte, from office and replaced her with 38-year-old lawyer José Jerí, the legislative body’s leader. After Boluarte failed to appear at her impeachment hearing over the crime wave hitting Peru, the Congress voted to remove her from office.
US-Argentina
The United States directly purchased Argentine pesos on Thursday and finalized a $20 billion currency swap line with Argentina’s central bank to stabilize the country’s turbulent financial markets.
Congo
DRC President Félix Tshisekedi called out Rwandan President Paul Kagame as he took the podium at the Global Gateway Forum, an investment conference in Brussels, Belgium. Tshisekedi appealed to Kagame to “make peace” with the DRC. The DRC claims that Rwanda is supporting the M23 rebel group, which resumed fighting in 2021.
Afghanistan
An explosion was heard in the capital. It has been reported that a Land Cruiser was hit in the area of Abdul Haq Square. The Taliban are investigating the explosion, while Taliban spokesperson Zabeehullah Mujahid said that there was no concern or damage.
This occurred as the Taliban and India were in discussions about starting diplomatic and economic relations. India has said that it will reopen its embassy in Kabul after a 4-year hiatus.
