Israel-Gaza
Hamas released twenty Israeli hostages from the 7 October 2023 attack, and Israel released Palestinian detainees as President Trump hailed it as a ‘historic dawn’ in the Middle East. The release of the hostages and detainees was the first point of his twenty-point plan; however, the rest of the plan, including the disarmament of Hamas, has not been negotiated and settled.
While the release was occurring, Hamas cracked down on the populace within Gaza, and there is a factional conflict within the group. Over 32 people are dead, and there have been arrests of the Palestinians who have been accused of helping Israel.
Madagascar
Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina fled the capital due to military-backed protests. He, later, dissolved parliament and made the statement via a Facebook post. Protests emerged last month after water and electricity shortages in the country.
United States
The United States government remains shut down, and government workers, including those in the military, are not receiving pay. President Trump stated that the War Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has the funds to pay its personnel and will do so on Wednesday.
After some confusion, Hegseth has backtracked on his comments that a Qatari military airbase will be set up on US soil. What he meant is that a training facility will be established at the air base in Idaho, and Qatari air force pilots will be trained on the F-15 fighter jet.
Holland
The Dutch Navy escorted the damaged Russian submarine, Novorossiysk, and its tugboat when it entered Dutch waters. The Novorossiysk was forced to surface in the Mediterranean after it suffered damage and a serious diesel fuel leak.
China
China has said it will “fight to the end” in a trade war with the United States after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused China of wanting to “pull everyone else down with them.” Bessent told the Financial Times: “If they want to slow down the global economy, they will be hurt the most.” China has set export restrictions on rare earth exports. In response, President Trump has threatened to raise tariffs by 100 percent on November 1.
