Iran
The Trump administration proposed a 15-point plan to the Iranian regime for peace. The plan includes handing over Iran’s enriched uranium, allowing the United States to develop nuclear power with Iran and a few more points that the Iranian regime will disapprove of. Iran pledged that a peace plan would have to include Hezbollah in Lebanon. This will be a non-starter for Israel. Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker denied that Iran is in negotiations with the United States.
Iran is charging some stranded oil tankers $2 million to transit the Strait of Hormuz. QatarEnergy declared force majeure on LNG contracts with S. Korea, China, Italy, and Belgium.
Elements of the 82nd Airborne Division will be deployed to the region. The order has not yet come through, but according to US officials, 3,000 personnel will be deployed to the Middle East. This increases rumours that the US is planning to seize Kharg Island from Iran.
Ukraine
Russia launched 948 drones at Ukraine within a 24-hour period. The largest aerial attack within 24 hours for the entirety of the war so far. This included a rare daytime attack of 556, of which 541 were shot down or suppressed – a staggering rate of 97%.
Smart Mines
Ukraine, Poland and Estonia launch a joint development plan to create smart minefields. The idea is to outfit mines with new electronic systems, such as “seismic and acoustic detection modules, remote activation capabilities, and distributed control systems based on encrypted mesh radio networks”.
South Korea
South Korea’s KF-21 fighter jet began mass production. The first KF-21 Boramae fighter jet rolled off the assembly line after 25 years of development. The KF-21 is classified as Generation 4.5 because it lacks stealth material on its fuselage, but it does have an active electronically scanned array radar, infrared search and track, an electro-optical targeting pod, and an integrated electronic warfare suite.
Ghana
Ghana and the EU signed a landmark defence cooperation agreement to combat Islamic extremism. Ghana is the first country to sign a cooperation agreement with the EU. EU representatives “delivered drones, anti-drone systems, bomb disposal vehicles, and motorcycles to the Ghanaian military” when visiting the country to sign the deal. Ghana’s neighbours are all fighting jihadist groups.
Iran-Europe
Iran is suspected of creating a group called the Islamic Movement of the Righteous Companions, which has claimed responsibility for a string of attacks on Jewish sites in Europe. European intelligence officials say the group wasn’t on their radar before this month and that using a fictitious group creates confusion and gives Iran some deniability.
Israel-Iran
Last week, Israel struck a naval outpost in the Caspian Sea, which was used for transporting Russian supplies to Iran, including drones, ammunition and other weaponry. The Israeli military said last Wednesday’s attack on the Caspian port, Bandar Anzali, hit dozens of targets, including warships, a port, a command center and a shipyard used to repair and maintain vessels.
