Iran War
President Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz was completely demined. A joint statement from Iran and Oman proposed a framework for a “joint temporary navigational corridor” through the Strait. Both countries have been in talks about creating a mutual transit route through the strait and a shared transit fee.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that a diplomatic deal with Iran is not possible with the “savages” who are ruling the country. That has been Netanyahu’s stance for some time, as he even campaigned against the 2015 nuclear deal brokered by then President Barack Obama.
Ukraine-Russia War
President Zelensky announced that the country has received some Patriot missiles. He would not comment on how many or from which country. Zelensky is seeking 300 Patriot missiles before the winter arrives. Ukraine will receive several French Crotale air defence systems and missiles.
Russian forces targeted Kherson’s thermal power plant, causing serious damage. The plant is the city’s main source of heat. This attack likely foreshadows Russian attacks on electricity and heating infrastructure ahead of winter.
The mysterious military transport plane that arrived in Moscow yesterday was carrying CIA Director John Ratcliffe. No confirmed details have emerged about who Ratcliffe met while in Moscow, though it was undoubtedly senior Russian officials. Vladimir Putin was reportedly in the Kremlin at the same time, so it may have been a face-to-face with Putin, though Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied it. Russian commentators believe Ratcliffe was there to warn Russia not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine. Ratcliffe may have been disappointed with his trip as he apparently left Moscow earlier than intended. He left that day.
President Zelensky awarded Elon Musk Ukraine’s Order of Liberty. Ukraine is seeking access to Starlink for drones operating in Russia. It is believed that Musk sees that as an escalation of the war. Currently, SpaceX imposes a geographic limitation on Ukrainian drones, allowing them to operate only within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.
Slovakia
Slovak police arrested two individuals over a planned arson attack on a drone manufacturing plant in eastern Slovakia. German authorities arrested another individual. Slovak authorities say the three were acting “as accomplices on someone else’s instructions.” The investigation is ongoing.
Sweden
The Swedish military asked the government to expropriate a property near the Musko Naval Base in Stockholm’s archipelago. A Russian businessman with ties to the Kremlin owns the property. The military says that the introduction of drones into the battlespace makes the naval base vulnerable to drone attacks from that property.
Spain
The Spanish government declared the situation in Ceuta as a matter of national security interest. A special body of different authorities has been created to ensure the safe return of migrants and minors back to Morocco.
Syria
The leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, announced that their mission is complete and declared the group’s dissolution as an independent military force. On 29 January, the government and the SDF signed an agreement for the SDF to integrate into the Syrian Army; that integration is complete. It is believed that Abdi has been offered an advisory role to Syria’s president.
Afghanistan
Pakistan denies the Taliban’s claims that Pakistani troops are involved in the fighting in Badakhshan. The Taliban have accused Pakistan of facilitating and supporting armed opponents.
The Afghanistan Freedom Front claims that it killed at least 10 Taliban members in recent fighting and that foreign militants were among the casualties. The group also claims that the Taliban has been conducting artillery strikes to break their defensive line.
India
India’s Ministry of Defence approved the transfer of all conventional missile systems from the state-run Defence Research and Development Organization to Indian private companies. This will allow private companies, and not just state-run enterprises, to produce missiles for the Indian military. The aim is to move missiles from development to mass production faster, and at a greater scale.
