9/11 Anniversary
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. An entire generation has grown up in its shadow and had not even witnessed the events as my generation did on that fateful day. I was in high school as it happened, and like many, our classrooms were fixated on the TV. After 25 years, the world is preparing for a conventional war and altering its force structures for it. But looking back, the Taliban continues to provide a safe haven for al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda franchised chapters operating in Africa and the Middle East; the threat has not disappeared. ISIS still exists in those regions as well. I think as we pause and remember those events 25 years ago, we also reflect on the current threat of globalized terrorism.
Iran War
Iran is producing new missiles in limited quantities. Iran is building them in underground facilities and using existing stockpiles of parts. Reports also indicate Iran is building new underground facilities. The Pentagon reiterated that the US had “destroyed up to 90% of Iran’s drone, ballistic missile, and naval industrial base” and “significantly degraded” Iran’s ability to launch missiles and drones.
Iran’s Foreign Minister and Pakistan’s army chief discussed restoring diplomatic efforts and de-escalating the conflict.
Anthropic said that it disrupted Iranian state operations from using its Claude AI. Three Iranian-state propaganda institutions were using the platform to create propaganda, but also “doctrine manuals, persona systems, target databases and ministerial planning documents, allowing them to produce organizational structures and campaign material”.
Yemen
Houthi rebels have taken Perim Island, which effectively divides the Bab el-Mandeb strait into two shipping lanes. This occurred after Yemeni government forces withdrew. Houthi rebels also reached the city of Dhubab, which is opposite Perim Island.
With the ongoing situation in the Hormuz Strait, this means that approximately a third of the world’s seaborne trade is under hostile control.
Axios has reported that MBS twice called President Trump on Thursday, requesting US strikes against the Houthis. Trump declined, saying that the administration had no intention of taking direct military action against the Houthis at this time.
The UN estimates that 46,000 people have been displaced as fighting between government forces and the Houthi rebels resumed in southwestern Yemen last week.
Ukraine-Russia War
A Ukrainian counteroffensive pushed Russian forces from Lyman, according to Russian MilBloggers. Russian MilBloggers are becoming more frustrated with the Russian military and its effectiveness. Some say the Russian military has been lying about its gains and producing maps that incorrectly show it has seized territory it hasn’t; because of that, Russian troops cannot order close artillery support because, in effect and only on paper, they control that area. These “beautiful reports,” as they have become known, are having negative effects on the battlefield.
The EU has approved a $7.1 billion loan to Ukraine to buy air defences, drones and missiles as part of the Ukraine Support Loan, which has a total value across 2026 and 2027 of $104 billion. The support package will also finance manufacturing capacity for Ukraine’s defence-industrial complex.
Canada-Ukraine
Canada signed a 100-year defence agreement with Ukraine. Canada pledged $350 million for Ukraine air defences. The big news was the drone agreements. Ukraine will help Canada build “millions of drones” for the Canadian Armed Forces, and a third of those produced will be sent to Ukraine. Canada is launching a national drone marketplace for the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Coast Guard. It seems like a flexible procurement structure, but more details are needed. Another drone deal with Ukraine will be finalized in the coming weeks.
Lebanon
The IDF destroyed key tunnels built by Hezbollah beneath the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon. The US Geological Survey reported a 4.1 magnitude tremor in the area. A joint statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that “This is strategic terrorist infrastructure that was built over two decades, with Iranian funding and planning.” The IDF said that the complex extended more than two kilometres and contained “dozens of Iranian-made rockets, missiles, and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), as well as machine guns, dozens of anti-tank missiles, and hundreds of mines and explosive devices”.
The US wants Lebanon to create a plan to disarm Hezbollah across the entire country. Hezbollah refused to give up its arms after a law was passed earlier this year banning the group’s military activities.
BRICS Summit
The BRICS summit kicks off tomorrow in New Delhi at a time when members have attacked each other. BRICS member Iran has repeatedly attacked fellow members Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Despite the organization’s huge share of the global population and world GDP, it has little real political heft to wield jointly, as it remains fractured, with member states pursuing different interests.
Nigeria
The Nigerian government and Boko Haram reached a secret three-month ceasefire, according to The New Humanitarian. The truce followed the abduction of 360 villagers in March, and negotiations for their release led to the Nigerian government paying $3.7 million in ransom. The government denies paying any ransom, and it has not verified the ceasefire. Activity against Boko Haram has been quiet as of late, with the Boko Haram clashing with the Islamic State West Africa Province.
India
India’s Ministry of Defence approved $11.6 billion worth of defence procurement projects this week. According to the ministry, Indian companies will produce 98% of the equipment. These deals include new radars and jammers, high-mobility vehicles, self-propelled mechanical minelayers and utility helicopters.
