Iran War
President Trump believes that the Iran War will end after the US mid-term elections in November. He told reporters that “I think war is going to end immediately after the election because they can’t hold out any longer. They’re desperate to try and affect the election.” The Wall Street Journal reported that top White House advisors, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have privately warned Trump that the conflict could continue until the end of his presidency in January 2029.
Trump promised Americans that if the Republicans win the midterms, they would receive a $5,000 cheque, which would cost the government $1.3 trillion, based on the nearly 270 million adults in the United States.
Iran captured a US underwater naval drone. The Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle is designed for long-range surveillance and is built by Anduril. It is believed that Iran will reverse-engineer the drone. This would not be the first time Iran has reverse-engineered a US military drone. In 2011, Iran captured a RQ-170 Sentinel stealth reconnaissance drone and later unveiled domestically produced drones that appeared to heavily draw from its design. At the time, then-President Obama publicly asked Iran to return the drone.
Yemen
It is being reported that the Houthi rebels have taken the strategic port city of Mokha. Mokha, which is 150km south of the Houthi-held port city of Hodeidah, has been a major base for government forces. Capturing the city would give the Houthis a stronger position along the coastline and more control over the Bab al-Mendeb strait.
Ukraine-Russia War
Russia arrested a Russian security guard who was working at the British embassy. They allege that he was hired by Ukraine to provide surveillance of the British delegation for a false flag attack on the British ambassador. Russia’s FSB stated that Ukraine “planned to use this obtained information to prepare and carry out sabotage and terrorist attacks against the head of the British diplomatic mission and other diplomats, and then accuse the Russian side.” Neither Britain nor Ukraine have commented.
Amnesty International released a new briefing stating that Russia’s use of foreign nationals in the war amounts to human trafficking. According to the briefing, Russia has been targeting foreign nationals who overstay their visas, or accusing them of criminal offences and then presenting enlistment as a better alternative than detention or deportation. Russian activity in job advertisements to attract more migrant workers to the country has increased, and some are fraudulently drawn into the armed forces, expecting civilian jobs.
Ukrainian drones hit an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, a gas-producing city in northern Russia. This region is Russia’s natural gas capital and some 3,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
Vietnam signed a framework to establish a strategic oil reserve with Russia. Vietnamese President To Lam was in Moscow for talks with Putin. President Zelensky is in Canada today, meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Calgary.
Ukraine’s FP-7 ballistic missile is expected to enter active service within “weeks, not months” as it is currently in military trials. The Ukrainian company Fire Point makes the ballistic missile and is also developing a longer-range version called the FP-9. The FP-7 will have a range of between 200- 300 km while the FP-9 will have a range of up to 855km, according to the company.
Spain
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the National Intelligence Centre for not anticipating the mass migration into Ceuta. However, a newly declassified memo shows that Morocco’s intelligence service was warned a day earlier that several active WhatsApp groups were preparing to cross to Ceuta. The Spanish government maintains that the National Intelligence Centre did not pass the information to Ceuta’s governing body.
Syria
An explosion at a warehouse for the collection of weapons and war remnants killed 14 people and injured 14 more near the city of Sarmada in northern Iblib. Civil defence teams are working on extinguishing the fires, securing unexploded ordnance and recovering the victims. The government is attempting to clear and consolidate ordnance and munitions after 13 years of civil war.
Mali
Generative AI is being used in the conflict, according to a new report by the Timbuktu Institute. JNIM, the regional al-Qaeda affiliate, has been using generative AI to create propaganda posters, but it could become more prevalent and complex. The Tuareg rebels, who have aligned themselves with JNIM have used it to create AI-generated people in TikTok videos to create propaganda favourable to the Azawad Liberation Front. Russia’s Africa Corps has been the most prominent user of generative AI. But it is interesting to see that rebel and terrorist groups are using it and how that will shape the battlespace.
