Iran War
Jordanian Armed Forces claim that they engaged 20 Iranian ballistic missiles. 18 of the missiles were reportedly intercepted, and two fell in unpopulated areas. This comes as Iran launched retaliatory strikes targeting a US airbase in Jordan after the US struck oil tankers off Iran’s southern coast. The US launched the attacks on five IRGC tankers after Iran targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles.
An oil tanker carrying approximately 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil was struck by a drone in Iraqi territorial waters. There are no reports of casualties among the crew or any environmental impact.
A new report from the Centre of Strategic and International Studies claims that there has been a flurry of construction work at the suspected Iranian nuclear facility at Pickaxe Mountain. President Trump has repeatedly threatened to target the facility. But the site is out of reach of current US weapons, and the mountain is composed of granite, making it difficult to successfully destroy the facility.
Yemen
The Yemeni army launched an offensive against the Houthi rebels in Maareb. Reports say the army captured areas in southern Maareb. Yemeni government forces carried out artillery and airstrikes in support of the offensive. Houthi rebels claim that the dozens of airstrikes were carried out by Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has given no comment.
Pakistan’s defence minister cautioned that the Makkah defence cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye could be enacted if the conflict in Yemen impacts Saudi Arabia. Houthi rebels launched ballistic missile attacks on Saudi oil installations this week, injuring 73 people. The joint defence agreement aims to strengthen deterrence and states that an attack against one signatory is an attack against all of them. This would mean that Pakistan and Turkiye could become a part of the Yemeni conflict.
Ukraine-Russia War
Germany’s foreign minister floated the idea of providing Ukraine with information on draft-age Ukrainian men who reside in Germany. However, the process of contacting these men about their conscription should happen without coercion. His comments came hours after President Zelensky announced that Germany would provide additional Patriot PAC-2 interceptor missiles. The PAC-2 interceptor missile cannot defend against Russian ballistic missiles, as that would be the PAC-3.
Ukraine is preparing to sign contracts to receive about 1,000 Patriot missiles from its partners, with funding from an EU loan. However, delivery would not be immediate and would take time. The package includes the purchase of US-made PAC-3 missiles.
Finland
Finland completed its new 200-kilometre fence along the border with Russia. Finland shut its border in 2023 after more than 1,300 migrants arrived at Finland’s border without visas. It spanned 200 kilometres of Finland’s 1,340-kilometre border with Russia. It cost €356 million, with estimated annual maintenance costs of €2-3 million.
Israel
Israel will close the British consulate in Jerusalem after the UK and other countries imposed sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank. 12 countries, including Britain, France and Canada, announced that they would sanction trade after an increase in settler attacks against Palestinians. Israel also announced that it will expel the British representatives that are monitoring the US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, ban some British parliamentarians from visiting the country and cease British training for Palestinian Authority forces.
North Korea
The IAEA reported that North Korea has built a new uranium enrichment facility at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex that could house up to 28 centrifuge cascades. The report relied on satellite imagery and open-source material as the IAEA has had no inspectors in the country since 2009.
