Saudi Arabia
Houthi rebels launched attacks on civilian and economic areas in Saudi Arabia, injuring 73 people, including women and children. The Houthis targeted a Saudi airbase and also targets belonging to Saudi Arabia’s state oil company. Saudi Arabia says that it reserves the right to respond.
Ukraine-Russia War
It has been estimated that Russia spends $29 million an hour on its war in Ukraine. According to analysis by Janis Kluge at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, this is a 30% increase from the same time period a year before.
Ukraine and Russia traded heavy blows last night, each launching major drone and missile attacks at each other. Russian forces launched roughly two dozen ballistic missiles and more than 30 cruise missiles at Kyiv and the nearby city of Bila Tserkva. Ukrainian drones hit Russia’s Saratov oil refinery this morning, setting it ablaze.
Over the weekend, Ukrainian special forces targeted a Russian cargo ship in the Mediterranean that is involved in the transport of Iranian weapons to Russia. The vessel, Lady Mariia, was heavily damaged off the coast of Libya.
Leaked documents show that Russia is constructing a large weapons manufacturing complex for missile components in Siberia, outside the range of current Ukrainian drone strikes. The $750 million expansion is in Biysk, Altai Region, about 3000km from Ukraine, and is expected to be in full production by November of this year. That extraordinary construction speed for the 51-hectare industrial facility indicates how important Russia is making the project.
Russia-North Korea
After months of construction, Russia and North Korea opened the first road bridge between the two countries. The two-lane bridge, which stretches one kilometre (0.6 miles) over the Tumen River, was officially opened by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song. Previously, the two countries were linked only by a railroad built in the 1950s.
North Korea
The US, Japan and South Korea are conducting naval drills this week. North Korea threatened that it will develop a nuclear-armed navy. Kim Jong-un made his comments at the commissioning ceremony of North Korea’s latest 5,000-ton destroyer, the Kang Kon. he also alluded to a development that will further demonstrate North Korea’s naval development, which would take place in eight months. Many see this as a new submarine capable of carrying submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
Serbia
The Serbian government proposed dissolving parliament to hold early snap elections. It is seen as a bid to tighten President Aleksandar Vucic’s rule after nearly two years of anti-government unrest. Elections were not due until December of next year, but the new snap elections will take place this October. The government has faced months of student protests, and it also faces EU pressure against holding a state funeral for war criminal Ratko Mladic.
Ratko Mladic, a Bosnian Serb war criminal who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was given a state funeral with military honours on Monday. Thousands of mourners attended as his body lay in state at the small Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Luke. Mladic was sentenced to life in 2017 for orchestrating the massacre of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica in 1995.
Syria
A clandestine nuclear reactor that was being built in Syria during the al-Assad regime was nearly complete, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Although the IAEA does not want to judge the previous regime’s intentions, it did add that “Given the configuration, the technical features of that type of reactor, this is a reactor that is very efficient in the production of fissile material that could be used directly for the fabrication of nuclear weapons.” The IAEA also found 73 tons of natural uranium metal.
Afghanistan
The Taliban have detained Shia and Hazara leaders in Kabul. This also came as the Taliban cleared protesters and seized the largest Shia cemetery in the capital. The Taliban, who are Shi’ite, have been clamping down on other interpretations of Islam and other religions.
The Taliban have launched a drone engineering programme at Kabul Polytechnic University. The new faculty will have four departments: drone and unmanned systems engineering, aircraft engineering, aerospace engineering, and radar and aircraft electronic systems engineering. This will not only allow the Taliban to repair and reintegrate leftover US and Soviet systems, but also propel them into developing new drones. Some Taliban drones have been shot down or crashed in Pakistan.
The Taliban and the Afghanistan Freedom Front clashed in Badakshan. This comes against the backdrop of the National Resistance Front and Afghanistan Freedom Front calling for a common platform for political, civil and armed groups opposing the Taliban. This happened in the fifth round of the “Cambridge Afghanistan Series”. That series was the first to bring panellists together to discuss issues between the main opposition groups.
Israel
A new book outlines that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was personally warned by the leader of the UAE that Hamas was planning a major offensive. In the book, “Kidnapped: 843 Days of Abandonment,” by journalists Shlomi Eldar and Ruth Yuval, it cites three senior officials who were updated on the phone call between the two leaders, which took place ten days before the 7 October attacks.
