Yemen
Houthi rebels launched a ground assault and rocket and drone attacks as the group attempts to push south along the country’s east coast. The Houthi rebels do not control the entire eastern coastline, which would give the group control over the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The offensive aims to cut off the government-held port of Mokha, which has been under fire for weeks.
Lebanon
Israel captured the strategic highland of Ali Tahar ridge from Hezbollah in Lebanon. There are expansive underground facilities there, including “operations rooms, rooms designated for combat gear, and others for generators and accommodation, in addition to showering facilities and a kitchen, allowing Hezbollah fighters to manage combat and remain inside for extended periods.” Israel continues to occupy southern Lebanon until it deems that the Hezbollah threat has been neutralized.
Iraq
Iranian-backed groups in Iraq continue to make demands and threats over the government’s plan to disarm them. Akram al-Kaabi, the general secretary of Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, said that if any US soldier remains in Iraq after 30 September, they will be killed. Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba is one of three prominent Iranian-backed groups that form the umbrella network of the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” and have indicated that they will not disarm.
Syria
Syria began destroying a newly found chemical weapons stockpile that was left by the previous al-Assad regime. This will include raw materials and munitions. Al-Assad’s forces used deadly gas attacks on rebels and civilians alike. It is the first time chemical weapons have been destroyed since 2014. The new government located remnants of al-Assad’s chemical weapons programme in May.
Ukraine-Russia War
A Russian general was shot and wounded in the Russian region of Saratov. It is believed to be Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, who heads a strategic bomber division at Engels-2 airbase. Ukraine accuses Varpakhovich of ordering a missile strike on a children’s hospital in the Ukrainian capital in July 2024.
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to visit Moscow before Kyiv on 5-6 September. Russian state news agency TASS reported that they will travel to Kyiv after Moscow. President Zelensky confirmed that they would arrive, but gave no dates. Witkoff and Kushner have yet to travel to Kyiv since becoming US presidential envoys involved in ending the war but have made multiple trips to Moscow.
There are reports that a Russian S-300 or S-400 system has been destroyed by Ukrainian drones in the city of Adler, not far from Sochi.
Germany
Two Bulgarian nationals were arrested for a suspected arson attack on two German defence companies in Munich. Incendiary devices were set off outside the technology group Rohde & Schwarz and German drone manufacturer Helsing. Rohde & Schwarz manufactures, among other things, security and communications technology for public authorities and the military. Helsing mainly produces drones for military operations.
For a third time this week, German authorities found another attempt to interrupt the German electrical grid. A suspicious device was found at an electricity grid transformer south of Duesseldorf in western Germany. An investigation is underway.
United Kingdom
The British military has been told to scale back non-essential training in order to save money. Those about to deploy on foreign assignments will continue to train, but collective training exercises for UK-based units are being suspended. These exercises include tank and Apache helicopter training. The Army did not deny the cuts, but said there is an emphasis on training with the lessons learned from Ukraine – prioritizing drone warfare and modernization.
