Iran War
There are rumours that President Trump is going to take a Sharpie in the White House and rename the Strait of Hormuz, the Trump Strait. As he has done with the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. Trump posted on his Truth Social account: “Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”
Sources claim that the White House will intensify attacks on Iran after the midterms, which take place on 3 November. This will give the US time to replenish depleted munitions, but intensifying the conflict before then will continue to increase fuel prices and the cost of living for Americans. The domestic political strategy is that, by not intensifying the conflict, it will not be as damaging to Republicans in the midterms. Most Americans already deem the war unpopular.
The US and Iran continued their reciprocal strikes. Iran targeted US bases in Kuwait. Iran threatened that they have adopted a new strategy that would shatter US foundations. It is unclear what the new strategy is or what is meant.
Yemen
The Yemeni government claims fighting continues in western Taiz, but government forces continue to repel Houthi attacks. The Houthi rebels also targeted western Yemen with 14 ballistic missiles in what is seen as an escalation.
Ukraine-Russia War
Belgium has fired back at other EU countries that have made a new attempt to use Russia’s frozen assets to fund Ukraine’s defence. The latest attempt was fueled by the surge in hybrid operations in Europe, and by the Germans declaring that Russia was responsible for the Leipzig drone incident on 4 August. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot clapped back that Belgium’s concerns over the legal issues of issuing those funds have not magically changed.
The EU postponed extending Russian sanctions until 9 September. The sanctions would continue to affect more than 3,000 Russian individuals and companies. Reports suggest that Slovakia was not prepared to extend the sanctions for another year. Slovakia wants to continue the six-month renewal and to remove some Russian individuals from the sanctions list.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiations between the US and Ukraine on licensed production of Patriot missiles are underway. Rubio pointed out that even if there is an agreement, it could take years for Ukraine to build enough manufacturing capacity to have a significant impact.
Iraq
The head of the Iranian-aligned Badr group laid out impossible demands for it to disarm. Hadi al-Ameri, the head of the group, stated that Iranian and Turkish groups need to lay down their arms in the country before Badr can disarm. But there are other demands being proposed by Iranian-backed groups in Iraq such as: “halting dealings with American companies, exporting oil in another currency, tackling the presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and Kurdish Iranian opposition groups, and expanding the authority of the Iraqi federal forces to the Kurdistan Region.“
Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims that defence officials intentionally did not wake him hours before the October 7th attack. Netanyahu alleges that defence officials knew he would mobilize and order attacks on anyone approaching the border, saying that they would be concerned that this would trigger a Hamas attack. There is no evidence of Netanyahu’s claims.
Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, claims that Israel has a plan to remove all people from the Gaza Strip, but is awaiting permission from the United States. Katz was quoted as saying “There is no real solution for Gaza in the end without this migration,” and that the Israeli government “is organized and prepared to get them out — by sea, by air, by every way possible”. President Trump floated the idea earlier in his first term of developing the strip into a luxury vacation destination.
Spain
A leaked police report has caused a political frenzy in Spain and sparked protests in Madrid. The leaked report claims that Moroccan forces played a role in pushing migrants toward the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. A senior police official later denied that any such report exists. Spain has not accused Morocco of inciting the mass migration, but cites reports of social media influence of a court ruling and human traffickers. Prime Minister Sanchez vowed to publish all documents relating to the incident, saying that the government has nothing to hide.
Sudan
Sudanese Army Chief of Staff Gen. Yasser al-Atta said that the Sudanese army is preparing to deploy continuously on all fronts, signalling an intensification of military operations in Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile. Last month, the Sudanese army retook several areas in North Kordofan. At the moment, the Sudanese army is amassing forces and military equipment in the Blue Nile region to halt the RSF advance.
Afghanistan
The Taliban’s Security and Clearance Affairs Commission held a meeting to review Afghanistan’s security situation. The commission found the overall security situation in the country satisfactory and reassuring. This is despite recent developments in which anti-Taliban groups have increased operations. The Afghanistan United Front claimed that it carried out 43 operations last month in 14 provinces. The Taliban’s defence ministry claims that it carried out 602 independent and joint operations with the Interior Ministry and intelligence agency this year, which disrupted complex enemy plots and dismantled opposition hideouts and networks.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) called for increased support to protect children. It found that in Afghanistan more than 3.7 million children are suffering from acute wasting caused by malnutrition and around one million of them face a severe and life-threatening form of malnutrition. The World Food Programme warned that more than 17 million Afghans are facing severe food shortages ahead of the coming winter months.
Pakistan
Pakistani security forces killed 15 suspected members of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan attempting to infiltrate Pakistan’s North Waziristan district. Large quantities of weapons and ammunition were recovered. This comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that regional peace and security is impossible while terrorist groups operate out of Afghanistan.
