Iran War
The United States carried out fresh strikes against Iran in retaliation for Iran’s targeting of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and of US personnel in the region. Tit-for-tat strikes are back.
Saudi Arabia confirmed the Iranian targeting of a Saudi vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, which killed two.
US CENTCOM says that it hit IRGC air defences, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications sites. Iran targeted US assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq with missiles and drones.
Russia is secretly assisting Iran in developing supersonic cruise missile technology. The Financial Times broke the story and cited leaked Russian correspondence, travel records and military patents. This means that Iran will eventually have the ability to fire a cruise missile several times the speed of sound, which will not only reduce response time for air defences, but shorten the time on target – threatening US naval presence in the region.
Ukraine-Russia War
President Zelensky vowed that the “Russian sky will be de facto closed” because of Ukrainian drones. Zelensky did not threaten airlines, but only warned that the skies will increasingly become more dangerous, suggesting an increase in drone activity against Russia. President Putin responded, saying that Ukraine was conducting state terrorism.
A fire broke out at a Russian rocket engine facility in the city of Perm. The factory and the company that owns it are leading producers of liquid-fueled rocket engines, including the RD-191, a liquid-fueled rocket engine used in Russia’s Angara family of launch vehicles. These launch vehicles are being used to expand Russia’s Rassvet satellite constellation – their emerging version of Starlink.
The Economist has reported that Russia has bypassed Western sanctions to acquire advanced 3D printing equipment, which has cut the production cost of Russian jet-powered drones in half. The cost of Russia’s latest generation jet-powered Geran drones is approximately $50,000-$70,000, with prices expected to fall further as manufacturing scales up.
There was a shootout in Kyiv between Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), and Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) during an investigation of a Russian FSB plot. It is believed that the target of the Russian plot was Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC). A unit of Russians that fight alongside Ukraine. A full investigation into the incident is underway.
Germany
German officials claim that Russia was behind the attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport earlier in August. In response, German officials pledged to increase security and close the Russian consulate in Bonn and the infamous cultural centre Russia House in Berlin. Restrictions will also be placed on Russians entering Germany. Putin, of course, denied the accusation, accusing Germany of planting evidence.
Yesterday’s news of an attack on a German coal power plant coincides with a separate incident in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A short circuit caused several power lines at a substation to go out of service. Security officials are treating that incident as an act of sabotage.
Spain
South Korea’s Hanwha won the contract to replace Spain’s M109 self-propelled howitzers with the K9 system for €4.55 billion. It is believed that Hanwha will provide 128 K9 self-propelled howitzers, 120 transport-loading vehicles, 11 command-staff vehicles, and 21 ARVs, as well as maintenance, training, and support services. The K9s will be produced in Spain, and there are rumours that Spain will have carte blanche on any modifications to the design.
Türkiye
President Erdogan signalled that Türkiye will deepen and strengthen its civilian nuclear power relationship with Russia and build additional power plants. At the moment, Rosatom, a Russian state corporation, is finishing the Akkuyu nuclear power station on Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast. It is expected to generate around 10% of Türkiye’s electricity when it comes online. This announcement will raise concerns among Türkiye’s western allies, as there has been concern about how close Türkiye has been with Russia during the Ukraine War and before, including the purchase of Russia’s S-400 air defence system.
Thailand
The USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in Thailand after nine months at sea. More than 5,000 US sailors and Marines will be headed for the Thai resort of Pattaya, a rest-and-recreation stop for US troops since the Vietnam War. Captain Dan Keeler, added that its first port visit of the “historic deployment” of 286 days at sea will allow their “crew to enjoy this beautiful and historic country”. Of course, there are concerns over sex tourism as Pattaya is known for its nightlife scene and the sex trade.
