Iran War
President Trump vows to hit Iran hard after the first exchanges of fire in a month. Trump has also been describing Iran as a failed nation with a severely degraded economy and military. Iran’s president stated that Iran will reciprocate if the US returns to its commitments under the interim deal signed in June.
Yemen
The Yemeni government stepped up operations in the Red Sea. It recently intercepted a boat carrying Iranian drone components that were being smuggled to the Houthi rebels. They have also targeted Houthi drone boats; it is unclear whether the waterborne drones were for surveillance or suicide drone boats. Yemen has been providing better training for its coast guard and naval forces in recent years.
Iraq
An Iraqi investigation court completed the interrogation of 5,704 accused members of ISIS from 67 nationalities. The Supreme Judicial Council will prepare to pass suspects in batches to trial courts to face charges based on individual evidence. Iraqis accounted for 474 of the detainees, while the main majority were Syrian, accounting for 3,497. Detainees also came from 16 Arab nations and 19 European Union countries.
Gaza
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz claims that a senior Hamas member was captured. Israeli-backed Palestinian militia reportedly carried out the raid, backed by Israeli air support. It is believed that the captured commander is the chief of internal security for Hamas.
Ukraine-Russia War
The EU executive is expected to lobby its members to supply Ukraine with Patriot missiles from their inventories. Spain and Greece will be under particular pressure. Earlier this year, Spain provided five Patriot missiles to Ukraine. Greece has resisted any pressure to give up any of its six Patriot missile batteries or missiles.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to discuss the Ukraine peace deal without Kyiv knowing in advance. The Trump administration wants to get peace talks back on the table. This also comes as G20 finance leaders met in Asheville, North Carolina yesterday. The Trump administration irked some G20 members by inviting Russia to the meeting. It is reported that Scott Bessent told Siluanov that no economic relief for Russia or agreements on other issues were possible until its war in Ukraine ends.
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Kyrgyzstan, Indian Prime Minister Modi told President Putin to end the war in Ukraine for the sake of humanity. Putin appeared tense at the meeting, constantly tapping his feet. Modi said: “Every day that the war continues, humanity is, in effect, set back a step, whilst every step towards peace gives all of humanity real hope for peace. We need to move from endless war to an end to the war, to a cessation of hostilities.”
France
France launched its new voluntary national service programme with a first tranche of 3,000 members. The volunteers will serve a 10-month stint, during which they will learn discipline, drill, military songs, and weapons handling. France aims to grow the programme to 10,000 volunteers in the coming years, and by 2035 they hope to have 50,000 volunteers. But the proof will be in the budget, as it is estimated to cost €1 billion by 2030 with an annual intake of 10,000. France has been experiencing strained public finances.
Germany
According to reports, the German Jänschwalde coal plant in Brandenburg came under improvised rocket attack. Several improvised explosive devices were found at a substation, and several power lines were damaged. This coal plant is also at the site of an open coal pit mining operation. This attack could not only be attributed to Russia’s hybrid operations in Europe, but could also be linked to hostile environmental activism. This is a developing story, and more details are expected.
United States
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned after months of tension with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Reports say Hegseth has been suspicious of those around him and their loyalties. Hegseth fired Army Chief General Randy George, whom Driscoll worked closely with and Driscoll defended in Congress over his firing. Hegseth has also fired other senior military leadership.
Canada
The head of Canada’s Defence Investment Agency, Doug Guzman, is reported to be resigning after being in the job for a year. Sources say Guzman, a former banker, is frustrated with how long government bureaucracy takes to get a defence procurement project going. The Defence Investment Agency was created to help cut bureaucratic red tape so Canada can modernize its armed forces faster. The submarine deal went through quickly, but there was urgency surrounding the project – not only to replace the beleaguered Victoria-class, but also for a political win for the government. Other projects won’t face the same pressure.
South Korea
South Korea’s intelligence service suggested that the United States and North Korea have been in dialogue. The National Intelligence Service assessed that a summit between Trump and Kim Jong-un could happen at any time. Trump has expressed that he wants to meet with Kim Jong-un again, but there has been no direct response, just criticism of what it sees as hostile US policy against the North.
