Iran War
Iranian banks and businesses remain open in Dubai, despite Trump’s Economic D-Day declaration. The aim of Operation Economic Outcast was to cut Iran off from global finance, trade, aviation and shipping, but it relies on other countries to sever their ties with Iran.
Ukraine-Russia War
Russia launched waves of drone attacks on Kyiv. Ukrainian emergency services said that Russia attacked the Kyiv region 38 times in the past 24 hours. Kyiv had 13 air raid alerts in a single day, the most since the war began. Kyiv was under air raid alerts for 872 minutes — nearly 15 hours.
Ukraine’s intelligence service claims that Russia aims to mobilize 300,000 troops this year and another 300,000 in 2027. In the first half of this year, it is estimated that Russia lost around 240,000 troops, of whom 140,000 were killed or severely wounded. Russian recruitment has fallen and has not been able to replace the number of soldiers that they have lost. It is believed that the mobilization announcement may be scheduled after the state elections on 20 September.
Serbia
Former Bosnian Serb leader and convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic died while serving a life sentence for war crimes during the Bosnian War in the 1990s, including the summary execution of more than 8,000 Bosniaks in July 1995 and the years-long siege of Sarajevo. Serbia’s justice minister Nenad Vujic stated that Mladic will “receive all the military and state honours to which he is entitled”, paving the way for Mladic to have a state funeral.
Spain
Protesters in Ceuta clashed with police and set fire to a migrant camp. Protesters attempted to stop Red Cross vehicles from reaching the beach to distribute food to the remaining migrants. Exact numbers are unknown, but there are between 7,000 and 10,000 migrants in Ceuta after more than 70,000 stormed the enclave last month.
Sweden-Finland
Sweden will deploy a corvette and Gripen fighter jets to Finland at least until the end of 2026. Finland asked Sweden to help strengthen its air defence. Sweden may also deploy ground-based anti-drone systems.
United States
A US judge blocked the Pentagon’s efforts to blacklist Anthropic AI. District Judge Rita Lin ruled that the Department of War acted illegally when it deemed the company a supply chain risk to national security. Anthropic refused to allow its Claude AI models for US surveillance and for autonomous weapons.
A trial date has been set for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. Mohammed was captured in 2003 and has spent nearly 20 years at Guantanamo Bay prison. Mohammed and three co-defendants will go before a military tribunal in June 2028. He is charged with 2,977 counts of murder, terrorism, hijacking aircraft, and attacking civilians.
Afghanistan
Pakistan’s foreign ministry stated that the Afghan Taliban could be considered an Indian proxy if it does not act in its own interests and continues to attempt to destabilize Pakistan. Pakistan wants the Afghan Taliban to prevent Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Baloch Liberation Army from attacking Pakistan from Afghan territory.
Russia will send arms and equipment to Tajikistan as border tensions with Afghanistan continue to escalate. Since November 2025, several attacks have been carried out from Afghan territory and targeted Tajik border guards and civilians, including Chinese nationals.
