Iranian “Ceasefire”

Iran continues to attack Gulf States with at least 94 drones and 30 missiles being fired at Iran’s neighbours.  Saudi Arabia intercepted five ballistic missiles and nine drones originating from Iran. Pakistan’s Prime Minister stated that the ceasefire violations have been recorded and urges restraint. American and Iranian delegations will meet in Pakistan for further talks on Friday.

Iran claims that Lebanon was part of the ceasefire deal, while the US and Israel claim that it was not. Israel launched a massive military operation against Hezbollah targets across the Litani River and southern Beirut.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Iran also published a chart showing the country may have deployed sea mines in the Strait.

President Trump announced an immediate 50% tariff on any country that provides weapons to Iran. In the past, China and Russia have supplied weapons and military equipment to the regime.

United Kingdom

Defence Minister John Healey announced that a British warship and a P-8 patrol aircraft deterred three Russian submarines from engaging in malicious behaviour. The Russian submarines were attempting to survey critical undersea cables and comprised one Russian Akula class nuclear-powered vessel and two deep-sea submarines from Russia’s directorate for deep-sea research (GUGI). This was a month-long operation.

China

China closed off large sections of its offshore airspace from March 27 to May 6. This was done without any official explanation, and there has been no public notification of any military drills taking place. This closure spans zones from the Yellow Sea near South Korea to the East China Sea off Japan, covering an area larger than Taiwan and extending from the surface to unlimited altitude. This has fuelled speculations of a possible invasion of Taiwan.

Nigeria

Nigeria begins a mass trial of 500 terrorism suspects. Most of the suspects are from the northeastern region of Nigeria, where Boko Haram has operated, and the suspects face charges linked to aiding and abetting terrorism.

Finland

Finland ordered an additional 112 K9 howitzers in a $635 million follow-up deal with South Korea. In 2017, Finland agreed to purchase 96 K9 self-propelled howitzers.
