Yemen War

Houthi rebels struck the Aden airport with two ballistic missiles. This is the sixth strike on the airport in days. The attack caused civilian injuries and material damage, but specifics were not detailed.

Houthi rebels are shelling residential areas along the front line in Lahj’s al-Mudarabah district. This is putting extra pressure on relief organizations that are struggling to meet mounting needs. Attacks have forced hundreds of families to flee. The attacks aimed to pressure local tribesmen to withdraw their support for government forces. This comes as Taiz has been under siege by the Houthis for 20 days, and the humanitarian situation there continues to worsen.

Russia

Russia is holding its two-day Russia-Africa Summit and hosting more than 22 foreign leaders. Putin aims to strengthen relations with Africa. Putin said that Russia was Africa’s best partner and called for an end to Western colonial domination.

It is being reported that Russian air defence systems shot down a record-breaking 1,214 Ukrainian drones overnight. Reports indicate the Bashkir Soda Company was hit in Sterlitamak. This is Russia’s only producer of terephthaloyl chloride, a critical chemical used to make high-strength aramid fibres found in body armour, helmets, and protective military vehicle materials. Ukraine halted its attacks on Russian oil refineries, but it has shifted its targeting to Russian chemical plants.

Bulgaria

Three drones struck the container ship Contship Jet off the Bulgarian coast. The ship sank in what is the fifth drone attack in the NATO country’s exclusive economic zone this month. All 18 crew members were rescued by Bulgarian naval and border police vessels. There is no indication yet of pollution, but the ship carried lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, gases, and other hazardous materials. Russia has not taken responsibility for the attacks, but suspicion lies that Russia is responsible. The incident occurred as defence ministers from Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye met in Bulgaria to discuss security in the Black Sea region.

France

A new parliamentary report by lawmaker Yannick Chenevard argues that the French government should order a second next-generation aircraft carrier by 2029 to ensure a permanent Carrier Strike Group presence at sea. Chenevard also argues that building it immediately after the France Libre will lower costs by up to 30% because research and development expenses are already covered and economies of scale are maximized. Hull assembly for the France Libre begins in 2032 in Saint-Nazaire, with commissioning scheduled for 2038. The total program cost is estimated at € 10 billion.

Hungary

The European Union approved a €5.4bn defence loan to Hungary as the EU concluded its first Security Action For Europe (SAFE) allocations, leaving just over €21 billion available for a new funding round. Hungary originally wanted €16.4 billion, but the Magyar government trimmed it and examined potential corruption risks.

Ethiopia

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that Ethiopia acquired 12 Russian Su-35 fighter jets and will also acquire four S-400 air defence batteries. Ethiopia has not set a date for receiving the S-400s, but it received the Su-35s a year earlier than expected. Tensions are high on the Ethiopian-Eritrean border with the recent conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Russia has increased its defence exports to Ethiopia and signed an agreement to assist with military training.

Nigeria

Nigeria will begin mass production of military hardware within a year to meet domestic requirements and export equipment to other African countries. Nigerian Minister of Defence Christopher Musa announced this at the maiden Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX). Nigeria aims to be more self-reliant in defence manufacturing rather than relying solely on imports. Nigeria relies heavily on countries such as the US, France, Italy, and China.

Australia

Retired Australian admiral Peter Briggs warns that Australia will have to triple its submarine service personnel. Australia plans to acquire three to five Virginia-class, nuclear-powered submarines from the United States to replace its six diesel-electric Collins-class vessels. Each Virginia-class submarine needs a larger crew, 134 personnel compared to 42. This means not only more training, but also an aggressive recruitment campaign.

North Korea

Kim Jong-un urged company commanders to intensify training and sharpen combat readiness, calling it their “primary revolutionary task.” This was the first meeting of all military company commanders since the party’s ninth congress in February and took place on 22 and 23 October. This comes as North Korea improves its military capabilities across the board.

North Korea appears to have conducted a test broadcast of its propaganda loudspeakers. Residents in the South Korean border city of Paju heard a faint wail around 6:30 a.m. The volume was low, but residents say it sounded similar to the ghostly wails and animal cries that blared in previous years.

North Korea fired about a dozen short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Thursday. This is seen as a rebuff to South Korea’s offer of dialogue to ease recent border tensions.
