Yemen War
The Taiz Governorate Media Office claims that it has received constant and consistent claims that the Houthis are using chemical weapons against the civilians of the besieged town of Taiz. It also called on the United Nations to investigate. Civilians and members of the Popular Resistance in shelled areas reportedly suffered severe breathing difficulties or lost consciousness. The UN warned last week that fighting had cut off more than 800,000 people in Taiz from deliveries of food, fuel and medical supplies after it blocked major roads into the city.
Saudi air defences intercepted two Houthi ballistic missiles as they headed toward Riyadh. The coalition also reported that it intercepted a drone in the Mecca region, prompting suspicions that the Houthis are attempting to target the holy city again.
United States
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth fired another general. Lt. General Brett Syliva, who served as the director of Strategy, Plans, and Policy of the Joint Staff from 2025 to 2026. According to an internal report seen by Axios, Syliva admitted to leaking classified information about Ukraine and Iran to two reporters from separate outlets over a one-year period. Apparently, one leak was sent through the Signal app and the other documents were given at a Silver Diner in Arlington, Virginia.
The Pentagon is treating a spate of mysterious freezer malfunctions that spoiled food at military bases across the United States in August as a suspected hack. Recently, a French grocery chain also claimed its freezers became inoperable due to a cyber hack. It is not a cold case, as hackers in 2022 targeted or broke into supermarkets in Russia and Israel that used obsolete versions of their cold storage controllers.
Ukraine-Russia War
Ukraine resumed attacks on Russian refineries after a two-week pause last night, with a major attack on a Russian refinery in Samara. Photos and video footage posted on social media showed columns of smoke rising into the sky over the Novokuibyshevsk refinery.
Humanitarian operations in Olsehky are underway, but serious concerns remain about evacuating the town. Originally, 527 residents intended to travel back to Ukrainian-controlled territory, but some withdrew after knowing that they might have to enter Russian-held territory and then would hopefully be transferred back to Ukraine. Fears over being abducted or imprisoned by Russia are a serious and genuine fear. Russian forces began evacuating residents before the agreed date as well.
Latvia
Latvia will allow its border guards to pre-emptively fire to defend against hybrid attacks. Border guards will be permitted to use physical force, special combat techniques, special equipment, firearms, and service dogs to stop attacks on facilities protected by the State Border Guard or on state border infrastructure. The change in law is a response to an incident earlier this month when the little-known “Black Rus” group attempted to force migrants through Belarusian territory into Latvian territory.
Chad
France will send two fighter jets and a military transport aircraft to Chad to assist in the country’s training. The stopover will take place as part of a joint military exercise involving the armed forces of Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, and France in November. This also comes as Niger claimed that Chad carried out a drone strike on its territory. Niger has accused both Chad and France of attempting to topple the current military junta. A last-minute scheduling adjustment for a training exercise shows that France continues to support Chad amid recent regional tensions.
Germany-South Korea
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is in Seoul. Germany and South Korea upgraded their bilateral ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, under which the two countries will deepen cooperation in security and future technology. This will include regular military exchanges and training cooperation, as well as information exchanges.
Afghanistan
According to the United Nations, opium production in Afghanistan increased fivefold in 2026 compared to 2025. The Taliban banned opium production, but poppy cultivation increased sharply from around 10,000 hectares in 2025 to more than 43,000 hectares in 2026. Taliban Interior Ministry’s deputy minister for counter-narcotics said authorities had conducted 25,116 anti-drug operations in 2026. This resulted in the destruction of 26,500 hectares of land which cultivated opium and cannabis and the arrest of 10,065 suspects.
The Afghanistan Freedom Front said that it had acquired advanced anti-drone technology to strengthen its defences. It did not explain what the anti-drone technology was or where it came from. A senior member of the AFF said the acquisition resulted from training and studying combat experiences in various countries. AFF fighters are present in the mountainous areas of Badakhshan and Nuristan, and the rugged terrain has stymied Taliban efforts to drive them out.
North Korea
Crypto platform Binance halted trading following a suspected hack now linked to North Korea. A North Korean hacking unit is believed responsible for stealing more than $6 billion from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. US-based blockchain intelligence firm TRM says that $6.36 billion was stolen from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains, most of it within about 20 minutes. In 2025, Bybit lost $1.5 billion in an attack, and the FBI attributed that attack to North Korea. Hacking and ransomware have been a source of income for the North Korean regime as it attempts to finance its missile and nuclear programmes.
North Korea conducted attack drone tests as Kim Jong-un calls for “absolute superiority”. The tests also included cruise missiles and Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS). North Korea has learned from its deployment to Russia. Jong-un stressed that the aim is to “seize absolute superiority in drone technology” and that it is an “indispensable option in the light of the ever-changing patterns of modern warfare.”
