Iran War
According to Axios, President Trump may consider a large-scale operation against Iran if the Democrats win the midterms on Tuesday. The premise is that Trump will attempt to assert his control on the international stage if he loses domestically.
Iran warns of a longer conflict if the United States were to launch attacks. Trump has boasted that the US will be able to target critical targets like Pike Axe Mountain. An Iranian army spokesman said that “a potential future war could last longer than the previous conflict, and the American president would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions of its conclusion.”
The IRGC resumed shelling Mount Shaho in western regions of Iran for a second consecutive day. In the past few weeks, clashes have occurred between the Kurdistan Free Life Party’s armed wing and Iranian security forces. Although Mount Shaho is a protected area, the IRGC claims that the Kurds have been launching drones and artillery strikes from the area. The Mount Shaho mountain range provides habitat for Persian leopards, brown bears, wild goats, wolves, and rare bird species. There are reports of “portions” of the mountain’s oak trees caught fire following the shelling.
Israel
The IDF has withdrawn from Hebron after ending its operation after two Israeli soldiers were killed in late October. The military cleared out the neighbourhoods of the Palestinian gunmen, which displaced more than 3,000 people. The IDF also demolished the homes of the two attackers and “sealed an underground space located next to” one of them.
Ukraine-Russia War
Russian casualties increased by 8,170 more than in the previous month. Estimated Russian losses for October are 54,400 soldiers. This is the highest monthly figure since the war began. The figure includes those killed, wounded, and missing in action. Ukraine also liberated 96.2 square kilometres (37.1 square miles) from Russia, compared with 85.8 square kilometres (33.1 square miles) liberated from Russia in September.
Ukraine’s air raid alert system was hacked. Sirens sounded across the country, and people received false alerts warning of nuclear, chemical, and street fighting threats. It is believed that Russia was behind the cyberattack, but if attacks continue, it may erode the confidence Ukrainians have in the app. Russia claims that its emergency app was hacked, only hours after Ukraine announced the cyberattack on their app.
Russia’s state statistics agency, Rosstat, claims it was hit by a coordinated cyberattack. Messages from two hacking groups claim to have stolen 23 terabytes of data, including information on Russian losses in the war in Ukraine. The hackers claim that the files included data on Russian wartime losses, demographic and economic statistics, and documents marked “for official use only.”
European Union
Hacks on refrigeration in Europe are heating up. Grocers in Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Estonia, Sweden, and Finland report that hackers have compromised their cooling units. The attackers remotely switch the cooling units or evaporators into defrost mode, driving temperatures up to 50°C–70°C (122°F–158°F) overnight to spoil fresh and frozen food stocks. Similar attacks have occurred in France and at US military stores. No one has taken responsibility for any of the cyber attacks.
Slovakia
Slovakia’s Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka announced on 30 October that he has reopened a criminal case against former Prime Minister Eduard Heger and former Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď over the 2023 decision to donate the country’s MiG-29 fighter jets and Soviet-era KUB air defence systems to Ukraine. This was done under a caretaker government, and Prime Minister Robert Fico has long criticized Western military aid to Ukraine and the defence assistance the previous Slovak government provided. Fico has been widely seen as sympathetic to Russia.
Venezuela
At least 19 people were killed in a recent attack on a Colombian guerrilla group’s camp inside Venezuela. The Venezuelan army targeted a camp belonging to the National Liberation Army (ELN). US intelligence supported the attack, which was carried out by drones and attack helicopters. Several groups operate along Venezuela and Colombia’s porous 2,200-kilometre (1,367-mile) border and engage in illegal mining, smuggling and drug trafficking.
Nigeria
Nigerian troops killed four high-ranking terrorists from an Islamic State-linked terrorist group, including a member of its so-called Shura Council and two other high-ranking terrorists, during an operation in Borno State. This operation came after one in Buni Yadi three days prior, where Nigerian troops killed 55 terrorists, including several high-ranking terrorists.
United Nations
The UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia formally ended its operations on Saturday, concluding a two-year transition and more than three decades of UN political engagement in the Horn of Africa country. This comes as the UN’s peacekeeping mission in the disputed Western Sahara ceased operations on Sunday after 35 years, following a US-Russia standoff over the territory’s future. Both Morocco and the pro-independence Polisario Front, which is backed by Algeria, claim the mineral-rich region.
North Korea
North Korea test-fired cluster-bomb munitions mountable on tactical ballistic missiles. According to the North Korean Central News Agency, the Standard Type 2 cluster-bomb warhead is capable of turning into ashes a target area of 12 to 13 hectares with its highest-density power. North Korea often claims that its weapons are deadlier than they are. Russia also uses cluster munitions on tactical ballistic missiles and has done so in Ukraine. North Korea may be learning from Russian operations, but this could also indicate Russia is helping North Korea with another weapon type.
Pakistan
According to the Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), terrorist attacks in October dropped by 37 percent compared to September. Pakistan experienced 143 terrorist attacks during October, compared with 226 in September. Attacks in Balochistan decreased, but also in the Khyber region; however, an increase in kidnappings, particularly in Balochistan, remained a major area of concern. It should be noted that Baloch activity in Iran also increased last month.
