Ukraine
President Zelenskyy told President Trump that Ukraine is ready for elections if the West can provide security assurances. Trump accused Zelenskyy of using the war to avoid elections as his term was supposed to end in May 2024. Because martial law has been declared, elections have been suspended under the constitution.
Democratic Republic of Congo
Gunfire and explosions have been heard near the city of Uvira as M23 rebels continue their advance. There are reports that government troops have been seen fleeing from the city. And a further 200,000 civilians have fled the area. A spokesman from the US State Department stated that Rwanda continues to support the M23 rebels and must prevent an escalation of violence. The US, the European Union, and other countries also call for Rwandan forces to withdraw from eastern Congo.
South Korea
South Korea protests that a joint Chinese-Russian air patrol entered South Korean airspace. South Korean fighter jets were sent as Russian and Chinese warplanes entered the air identification zone near Ulleung Island and Dokdo. Both South Korea and Japan also claim the area. Russian and Chinese fighter jets have entered South Korea’s air identification zone before, and Russia claims that it does not legally exist as it was “unilaterally” established.
Thailand-Cambodia
The United States told both countries to stop fighting. Clashes continue into their third day as 10 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
Pakistan
Militants stormed a checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, near the Afghan border, and killed six Pakistani soldiers. Two militants were killed. It is unclear if the militants came from Afghanistan or not, but with tensions being high with the Afghan Taliban and the continued attacks from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, it will not improve the situation.
Canada
The Department of National Defence is “scrambling” to figure out how to clothe, train and equip a mobilized reserve force of 300,000. The plan was revealed by the government earlier this year, and with the Canadian Armed Forces having trouble equipping and clothing its current reserve force, the task is proving difficult, as supply chains are already maxed out.
