France

Nearly 2,400 people were arrested this weekend after violent clashes with police officers and protesters. In a state address, Macron said local authorities could ban certain rallies in the coming days if necessary. Some have imposed restrictions, such as no public gatherings between noon and 8 pm.  Macron fell short of imposing a curfew and introducing state-of-emergency measures. France is in a political and economic crisis, as a debt sell-off has hit. The protests began over deteriorating conditions in public schools and a surging cost of living, and have expanded into broader nationwide demonstrations.

Israel

With the Israeli election looming, President Trump endorsed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump stated on social media that Netanyahu was a “Great Warrior Prime Minister, and an even greater Partner for Peace in combating the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Roughly seven minutes after Trump’s endorsement, Netanyahu published a video compilation of instances where the US president praised him, with the caption: “Thank you, President Trump, for the tremendous support and the joint work. Together we’ll finish the task!”

The IDF has been placed on a heightened alert because of Israel’s elections, and leave has been cancelled for soldiers.

Israeli settlers attacked a group of European diplomats in the occupied West Bank. The attack occurred in the village of Taybeh, a Palestinian Christian village east of Ramallah, and it is believed that the diplomats were from France, Belgium and Poland. All three countries condemned the attack and called on Israel to provide better protection for diplomats, journalists and Palestinians and to bring those involved to justice. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said there were no soldiers in the area at the time of the attack, and the visit had not been coordinated with the military.

Ukraine War

It was reported on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a trilateral summit in November between Russia, China and the US to settle the Ukraine war. Putin raised the idea with US President Donald Trump in a phone call on 9 October, according to an unnamed Russian intelligence official. The Kremlin has suggested holding the trilateral dialogue on the sidelines of the coming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which takes place on 18-19 November in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese tech hub. The summit has not been confirmed.

The US has resumed intelligence sharing with Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday. Ukraine relies on US intelligence to spot fast-moving ballistic missiles fired at Ukrainian cities. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claims that there was no pause in intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha outlined that Russia conducted 76 strikes on energy infrastructure in Ukraine last week. This comes after President Trump announced an energy ceasefire, and after three days of continuing strikes on Ukrainian facilities, Ukraine began targeting Russian oil facilities again.

After President Trump waved sanctions and tariffs on Russian exports, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the president will take up to 60 days to assess the economic impact of the sanctions and tariffs. Rubio believes that Trump will “analyze what imposing both sanctions and tariffs will mean to the global economy and even to the U.S. economy.”

Canada

After a fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed 4 fatalities and at least 19 service members in critical condition. A grass fire broke out in the training area, and winds gusting up to 100 kilometres an hour fanned the flames. Investigators are still examining the incident to determine what happened and what started the blaze.

Nigeria

Nigeria’s Army Chief of Staff visited troops in Borno State after 15 soldiers were killed in a jihadist attack. It is believed that the jihadists were from the Islamic State West African Province. 15 soldiers were killed and five anti-jihadist militiamen; the jihadists burnt down the military outpost after the attack.

Japan

Japan will work to improve working conditions and benefits for Self-Defense Forces personnel as staffing shortages worsen. The SDF had 217,701 members at the end of March, but the authorized total is 247,154, meaning that only 88.1% of the required positions were filled. The government plans to review the pay system and support retired SDF personnel and their families, including measures to help them find new jobs after retirement.

Afghanistan

The Afghan Taliban and Pakistani forces exchanged fire along the border opposite Pakistan’s Kurram district. Both sides claim that they inflicted casualties, although no details have emerged.
