Ukraine Peace Talks
According to President Zelensky, trilateral peace talks among Ukraine, Russia and the US are on hold until after the Iran operation concludes. Zelensky is taking advantage of the Iran crisis by offering drone interceptor teams and technology to the Gulf states, in a diplomatic effort to urge Russia to agree to a ceasefire.
Global Energy
As the price of oil pushes past $80 a barrel, Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi told the Financial Times that Qatar expects all Gulf producers to cease exports in the coming weeks. Qatar believes the price of oil will increase to $150 a barrel if that is the case. Qatar ceased the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a few days ago. It will take Qatar a couple of weeks or a month to resume LNG production as the gas needs to be cooled to form a liquid. Qatar provides 20% of the world’s LNG.
Iran
Israel says that it is entering a new phase of heavy attacks on the Iranian regime. Attacks have been observed in Tehran as Israel is now targeting “regime infrastructure”. According to the IDF, Israel “dismantled” an underground command bunker that slain Supreme Leader Khamenei was supposed to use. The bunker was still used by senior leadership.
Iran issued a warning that all Kurdistan-related facilities will be targeted in Iraq if the Kurds mount an operation within Iran. There have been reports that the US is preparing the Iraqi and Iranian Kurds to mount an insurgent-level operation, so a greater civilian uprising may occur.
There are reports that the US may transfer Patriot air defence systems from South Korea to the Middle East as an attempt to shore up air defence capabilities in the region, as the Iran operation continues.
Finland
Recently, French President Macron announced that France will provide a nuclear umbrella to European NATO allies if they wish. It is expected that French aircraft, armed with nuclear weapons, would be stationed in Germany and Poland. Finland has expressed its interest in hosting French nuclear assets. This led to Moscow’s condemnation, of course.
Central African Republic
During his visit to Moscow, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra pledged to establish closer ties with Russia. There are calls to strengthen partnerships in key sectors, including energy, as CAR has faced numerous energy shortages. Touadéra thanked Putin for fuel donations to the country to alleviate the crisis.
South Sudan
Two officers will be tried over a civilian massacre. At least 25 civilians, including women and children, were killed in Ayod County in Jonglei state on February 21. Two officers, including a major, and several non-commissioned officers will be facing a court-martial on the matter.
In a separate case, according to a UN report, Ugandan troops assisted with air strike coordination, which killed and badly burned civilians a year ago. The report, released by the UN High Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, states: “targeted civilian-populated areas predominantly affecting Nuer communities in opposition-affiliated areas”.
