Poland
Poland intends to invoke Article 4. NATO members will consult together when any member considers that their territorial integrity is threatened. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk states that there were 19 aerial incursions into Polish airspace overnight, with at least four Russian drones shot down within its territory.
Germany
German authorities have seized the cargo vessel “Scanlark” on suspicion of espionage and possible sabotage on the Kiel Canal. This occurred on 8 September.
ICBM & F-35 Cost Increases and Delays
The US Government Accountability Office reports that F-35 Block 4 modernization is $6 billion over budget, and the program is five years behind schedule. The GAO also reported that the US’s ICBM modernization program is also at risk due to delays and poor management. Currently, the US IBCM inventory consists of Minuteman III missiles, which are 50 years old and the GAO warns that the Air Force might have to operate and maintain them for an additional 25 years.
EU-Israel
The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she would be seeking sanctions and a partial trade suspension with Israel over its war in Gaza. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, in a social media post, said Von der Leyen had succumbed to pressures that undermine Israel-Europe relations. He said her actions will embolden Hamas.
EU
Ursula von der Leyen gave a fiery speech to EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France, saying that Europe must fight for its values and that battle lines are being drawn for a new world order based on power. Here are some quotes from that speech: “Europe is in a fight,” she said. “A fight for our values and our democracies. A fight for our liberty and our ability to determine our destiny for ourselves. Make no mistake — this is a fight for our future.” “Battle lines for a new world order based on power are being drawn right now,” she said, adding that the EU “must fight for its place in a world in which many major powers are either ambivalent or openly hostile to Europe.”
France
Nationwide protests in France today as people blocked roads, set fire to trash cans and clashed with police. Nearly 300 have been detained so far, with 80,000 police deployed across the country. 100 schools have reportedly been disrupted, with 27 fully blockaded.
Democratic Republic of Congo
At least 60 are dead after an ISIS-linked attack on a funeral. According to authorities, the majority of those killed were killed with machetes. The attack was purportedly carried out by an ISIS-linked group called the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The ADF have taken advantage of the violence between the M23 and the Congolese government and have carried out a series of attacks in the Kivu region.
Nepal
On Tuesday, crowds set fire to parliament in the capital Kathmandu, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Government buildings and the houses of political leaders were attacked around the country.
