Iran War
South Korea’s president said that the country will not deploy its troops or military assets in a way that would get the country involved in the Iran War. This means that if the South Korean military is deployed to the region, it will protect South Korean vessels, oil shipping routes, and South Korean nationals.
President Trump is weighing a major escalation in the Iran war. In an interview with Axios, Trump was quoted of saying: “I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them [the Iranian regime] or do I not? It’s a big decision. Anything could happen with me.” His comments come ahead of a planned meeting with the leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Yemen
Yemen’s Interior Minister Major General Ibrahim Haidan warned that Iran will assist Houthi rebels in fortifying their positions and capabilities in the Bab el-Mendeb Strait. The IRGC in the past have assisted the Houthis with building fortifications, operations rooms and facilities for missiles, drones and remotely guided boats. The IRGC has also smuggled weapons and missile and drone technology to the group in the past and even recently. Haidan cautioned: “The danger is not limited to the threats that exist today, but extends to what is being built for the future.”
Saudi Arabia
The US approved the potential $24.3 billion sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. President Trump indicated in November that he would sell the aircraft to Saudi Arabia, which sparked some outrage from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency also warned that China might gain access to F-35 technology due to Chinese military access to Saudi bases and Saudi Arabia’s use of Chinese technology in its telecommunications infrastructure.
Ukraine-Russia War
President Trump indicated that he will sign the sweeping Lindsay Graham sanctions bill, which passed recently. The new sanctions bill will allow the US to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas, as well as five countries helping Moscow evade energy sanctions. Russia says that if Trump signs the bill, it would make a peace deal harder to reach.
Russians head to the polls for State Duma and regional elections. The three-day parliamentary election will choose the composition of its 450-seat lower house, the State Duma. However, there is much less choice in political parties than previously, and most anti-war candidates have been excluded from the ballot. This is the first election since the war began in 2022.
The elections have not stopped Ukraine from launching drones. It is believed that voting was halted in Sochi due to Ukrainian drone alerts, and it is reported that one drone hit a polling station in the resort city.
Pakistan
At least sixteen people are dead, including five police officers, after a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a police facility as people were praying at a mosque inside. A gun battle between police and other terrorists ensued. It is believed that Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, is responsible.
Afghanistan
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid warned Pakistan from carrying out military operations within Afghanistan’s borders. The Taliban continually reject that the Pakistani Taliban or al-Qaeda operate within Afghanistan. The Taliban have invited Saudi Arabia to mediate.
Indonesia
Indonesia welcomed the delivery of its first aircraft carrier. The 41-year-old former Italian navy vessel Giuseppe Garibaldi docked in Indonesia after sailing from Italy. The vessel can carry up to 18 helicopters and accommodate up to 830 personnel. Indonesia said it will aid disaster relief across the archipelago, but this also comes as it upgrades its military. The Italian navy decommissioned the vessel in 2014 and gifted it to Indonesia. Italy is seeking defence deals for submarines and aircraft with the country and is seen as a way to sweeten any potential deal.
North Korea
Unexpected seismic activity has been detected around North Korea’s nuclear testing sites, especially after the regime’s most powerful test detonation in 2017. A total of 1,330 earthquakes have followed since, concentrated along a fault zone spanning about 24 kilometres wide, researchers from South Korea’s Pusan National University and China’s Chengdu University of Technology found and published an article in Science. The research team also concluded that an earthquake as strong as magnitude 6.4 could occur. On a side note, the article had no mention of a North Korean version of Godzilla.
