Iran War
Iran threatened to hit new targets if the United States resumes attacks. Iran also boasted that it has new weapons to deploy in the war, which has not been verified. An IRGC spokesman said on state TV on Saturday that the United States was preparing a major attack and vowed that the country is prepared for a prolonged war.
Yemen
The Houthi rebels fired a ballistic missile at Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. A large plume of smoke was seen near the King Khalid International Airport. The missile was intercepted, and no damage or casualties were reported.
The Yemeni army says that at least 80 Houthi rebels were killed in fierce fighting outside the central city of Marib. Government forces were backed by warplanes and drones. Marib also hosts the largest concentration of internally displaced people, with an estimated 2 million people seeking refuge over the past decade from fighting or Houthi repression.
Israel
MIND Israel, a nonpartisan organization specializing in foreign and security strategy, released a warning through an in-depth study. The study suggests Israel should become a major regional power or risk collapse as its foundations are rusting. The study involved 100 experts and “identified six critical issues requiring urgent decisions: Israel’s regional standing, the quality of its human capital, the relationship between the economy and security, governance and national resilience, demographic changes, and relations with the United States.”
United States
President Trump claims that he has a deal with Denmark and Greenland to bolster the US military presence in Greenland. Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, is expected to sign the deal this week at the United Nations General Assembly, but it will still need parliamentary support before it can be enforced.
The US is investigating how a shipment of F-35 parts was diverted from Australia to Hong Kong, raising alarms about how China can gain access to the stealth fighter jet technology. The parts needed repair and were being sent back to the US. According to sources, some of the components disappeared from the shipment.
President Trump revealed a plan for his Triumphal Arch. Trump wants to post snipers on the arch, store large quantities of sniper ammunition and have it house drone capabilities. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum called it the “Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck” and said ground will be broken for construction within two weeks, despite still awaiting final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission and other federal reviews.
President Trump banned CNN, MS Now and Politico from the White House. The three outlets are filing a First Amendment lawsuit.
Ukraine-Russia War
As Russians went to the polls this weekend, Ukraine continued its strikes on Russia, including the largest drone attack on the Russian capital, according to Moscow’s mayor. More than 1,000 drones were launched from Ukraine this weekend, and President Zelensky announced that Ukraine’s domestically built FP-7 Pelican ballistic missile was used for the first time.
President Putin’s United Russia party won 58% of the popular vote. Parties that supported Putin and the war with Ukraine were allowed to participate. Opposition parties were disqualified. United Russia will have 355 seats in the 450-seat Duma, 20 more than before.
While his ally in the Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, won nearly 100% of the popular vote. Kadyrov received 99.85% of the vote, a slight improvement from the 99.73% garnered in 2021.
NATO
Germany’s chief of defence Carsten Breuer will take over as chair of NATO’s highest military authority. Breuer won at least 17 votes from NATO’s 32 chiefs of defence during a closed-door ballot. The exact spread will not be revealed. The four-star German general beat Canada’s chief of defence Jennie Carignan for the role. He was seen as the favourite given Berlin’s status as Europe’s top defence spender and implicit backing from Washington. It is another reminder that Canada cannot rely on legacy actions and words, and that actions and new policies matter more.
Mali
The JNIM attack on Dioura may have been worse than previously indicated. JNIM released videos purportedly showing dozens of Malian soldiers who were captured, and the group is claiming more than 100 were killed in the attack. The Malian military junta has declined to comment. The junta is preparing to celebrate its independence day on 22 September.
Ethiopia
Seven Ethiopian armed groups have formed a new alliance to overthrow the government as fears of war between the government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) continue. The alliance includes former rivals such as the Amhara Fano National Movement, the TPLF, and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Both the government and the TPLF have massed troops along the border of the northern state in recent months. Reports say the groups have discussed forming an alliance for about a year.
Pakistan
Pakistan claims that the Taliban and India are cooperating to launch attacks on its soil as a means to destabilize the country. Pakistani media are citing intelligence sources, but this is also happening during the week of the UN General Assembly meeting. Pakistan’s GeoNews claims that Indian intelligence allocated more than $7.8 million to coordinate joint attacks by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Pakistan claims that 28 militants were killed in airstrikes in the border areas in Afghanistan. Pakistan’s information ministry claims that it targeted a training centre for suicide bombers and that a large quantity of weapons and ammunition was also destroyed in the strikes.
