Iran
In an address to the nation, President Trump announced that the US will conduct heavy strikes on Iran in the next two to three weeks. Many thought it would be a speech to declare victory over Iran, but it was a speech to reassure Americans of the military campaign.
The UK will host talks with 35 countries on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The United States is not due to attend these talks.
Armenia
Putin warned that Armenia cannot be part of both the EU and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared his country’s intention of joining the EU and suspended its participation in the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization. Armenia’s move toward the West may come with complications with Russia and possible increased Russian action.
Hungary
Viktor Orban’s government has been accused of using the country’s intelligence service to spy on the opposition Tisza Party. Hungarian elections are being held on 12 April. The Constitution Protection Office (Alkotmanyvedelmi Hivatal), one of the country’s five intelligence services, is believed to have tried to infiltrate the opposition Tisza Party. There is no evidence that Orban ordered the office to spy on the Tisza Party, but the CPO reports directly to the Prime Minister’s office.
Israel
Saudi Arabia and other countries condemn Israel’s new death penalty law, under which Palestinians face the death penalty for killing Israeli citizens. The new law was condemned in a joint statement from the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
North Korea
According to satellite images, North Korea is building a third Choe Hyon-class destroyer at the Nampo Shipyard. North Korea is preparing its first vessel for deployment. The Choe Hyon class weighs more than 5,000 tons, and there has been speculation that Russia provided assistance in its design.
Burkina Faso
Human Rights Watch stated that over 1,800 people have been killed since the junta seized power in January 2023. HRW attributes most of the killings, 1,255, to the military and allied militias, with the rest blamed on Islamist militants.
Mediterranean Sea
The towing of the Arctic Metagaz failed, and the disabled and abandoned LNG carrier is out of control at sea. The ship was attacked by a Ukrainian drone on 3 March. Due to hazardous weather conditions, towing the ship had to be abandoned.
