Mali

The Malian government has shut down schools and universities to save fuel. The al-Qaeda affiliate, JNIM, has set up roadblocks and blocked fuel convoys from Senegal and the Ivory Coast. Earlier this month, fuel shortages hit the capital, Bamako. 

North Korea

A senior US defence official stated that there is no evidence that North Korea has mastered hypersonic weapons capabilities. The United States recently deployed a new air defence system to South Korea to specifically deter North Korea and bolster ties with South Korea. 

Russia

Putin signed into law, terminating the plutonium disposal agreement with the United States.. The agreement was already defunct, but it was aimed at preventing the stockpile of fissile materials for the production of nuclear weapons. The Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement, signed in 2000 and amended in 2010, aimed to reduce 34 metric tons of plutonium and use it for nuclear energy. 

Venezuela

Venezuela’s attorney general accuses the US of trying to overthrow the government. He also claims that the US wants to seize the country’s natural resources, including gold, oil and copper. This comes after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro claimed that Venezuela captured a group of alleged mercenaries with ties to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

China-India

Direct commercial flights between China and India resumed as ties between the two countries improved. Direct flights were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but did not resume after clashes on the disputed Himalayan border. 

Pakistan

Pakistani Chief of the Army Staff, Field Marshal Munir, is in Jordan. Pakistan has been bolstering its ties in the Middle East, especially with Saudi Arabia, as of late. Jordanian King Abdullah II praised  Pakistan’s military contributions towards regional peace and security.
