Iran War
As Iran demands war reparations for the damage the United States has done in Iran, President Trump now demands that Iran must pay compensation to those American servicemen killed or wounded during the conflict.
Pakistan’s defence minister claims that the US and Iran are close to “some sort of arrangement” on peace. Asif claims that in the past few days both sides have come closer to an agreement.
Yemen
Houthi rebels fired a ballistic missile at a commercial vessel in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and killed three of its crew members.
Yemen’s armed forces targeted Houthi positions on several fronts. Army drones struck Houthi mortar systems and positions in the al-Radha Mountains in the governorate of Marib while the air force struck a Houthi camp on the al-Alam front in al-Jawf governorate.
Iraq
Iran launched missile strikes against the headquarters of the Kurdish opposition group, Komala Toilers Party of Kurdistan (Komala), in Iraq’s Erbil province. According to the group, more than 102 missiles and drones have targeted its positions since the start of the US-Iran conflict on 28 February.
Iraq’s Ministry of Interior claims that more than 500,000 weapons have been registered in a national database; Iraq has the goal of 6 million. It also shut down 71 unauthorized bases linked to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) as the government intensifies efforts to bring weapons and armed activity under state control. The government has the deadline of 30 September to bring weapons and armed groups under state control.
A suspected drone attack caused an explosion at a strategic ammunition depot at Camp Taji military base north of Baghdad. Most of the camp’s inventory of ammunition for armoured vehicles was destroyed. It is believed that the camp’s stockpile was approximately 50,000 rounds of various calibres for Abrams tanks and M113 armoured personnel carriers.
Syria
A Syrian court sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia. Al-Assad and his family fled to Moscow after being ousted in December 2024. Assad’s brother Maher and several other figures from the ousted government were also sentenced to death in absentia. They were convicted of crimes of “premeditated and intentional murder of more than one person and of children, torture, arbitrary arrest and crimes against humanity.”
Libya
A car bomb killed the Eastern Libyan military intelligence chief in the Hawari area of Benghazi. Eastern Libya is being held by the Libyan National Army under the commander Khalifa Haftar. Both sides of the conflict are in mediation by Pakistan. It is unknown who carried out the attack.
Russia
Russia’s Supreme Court annulled the registration of Yabloko, the only opposition party that opposed the war in Ukraine, from next month’s parliamentary elections. Its campaign slogans included “For a ceasefire agreement, diplomacy and peace!” “Our goal is to prevent nuclear war!” and “For a Russia free from fear and political repressions!” The party’s leader stated that they would appeal the court’s decision.
Ukraine-Russia War
The director of the aerospace company Fire Point estimates that Ukraine’s homegrown ballistic missile interceptor may be ready by mid-2027. This interceptor aims to partially or fully replace the Patriot PAC-3 missile. Currently, Ukraine faces an interceptor shortage and has not been able to counter Russian ballistic missile strikes in the country.
Ukraine’s military intelligence believes that Russia’s monthly missile production is running 10-20% above Russia’s target. For example, in July, Russia produced 87 Kh-101 cruise missiles; Moscow had a target of 72 missiles, or 140% of its planned output. Kalibr cruise missile: Russia planned to produce 26 in each month but manufactured 29 in July, exceeding its target by 11%.
Oleg Gushchyn, legal counsellor at Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, stated that Ukraine has captured Iraqi nationals who were fighting alongside Russian forces. It is believed that hundreds of Iraqis have been recruited by Russia. Currently, Ukraine is holding POWs from 51 countries.
Mali
At least 10 Malian soldiers were killed in an attack on a military base in central Mali. JNIM, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in the region, claimed responsibility. It also announced that it had taken full control of a Malian army barracks in the town of San, in the Segou region. Malian forces were redeployed and retook their positions.
United States
South Korea’s Hanwha made a preliminary offer of $1.2 billion dollars to acquire Austal USA. This would give Hanwha control of one of the largest US naval shipbuilders as the US wants to expand domestic shipbuilding capacity. The deal would only pertain to Austal’s business in the US and not its operations in Australia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
