Yemen
The Houthi rebels launched missiles and drones on the al-Mokha port on Yemen’s west coast. Although 11 drones were shot down, four soldiers and three civilians were killed and at least thirty injured in the attack.
This weekend, the Houthi rebels attacked the Saudi Aramco Jazan refinery. The refinery processes 400,000 barrels of crude oil a day. There is no indication that this will cause an escalation with Türkiye and Pakistan with the new defence pact. In fact, with Pakistan leading the US-Iran negotiations, it is unlikely that there will be an escalation.
Iraq
The Iraqi military carried out concentrated airstrikes on eight hideouts of sleeper cells for ISIS. Iraqi and Kurdistan Region security forces are conducting intelligence-led operations, and therefore it seems there is some coordination.
Iran War
Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States meets all of its demands. These demands include: the ending of the US blockade on Iran, halting all US and allied attacks on its regional allies, broad and immediate relief from US sanctions, and war reparations to be paid.
Syria
Syria and Russia reached a deal over the future of the Khmeimim airport and the commercial berth at Tartus port. The Syrian government will take over the civilian facilities, and the military facilities will be repurposed into joint training and qualification centres. Effectively, Russia will still have access, but not the permanent base that it had with the al-Assad regime.
Ukraine Russia War
Ukraine’s military intelligence claims that Russia is deploying its own version of Starlink, quicker than anticipated. Russia is implementing Rassvet, effectively a Russian analogue of the Starlink system. Russia launched its first Rassvet satellite in March and a second batch in July. It is believed that Russia could build and deploy a constellation of 292 satellites by 2027 and expand it to 924 satellites by 2035. Although it is supposed to be commercial, Ukraine believes that it can assist Russia’s military with drone control and communications.
Russia destroyed a World Health Organization warehouse in Dnipro, sending emergency health supplies up into smoke. The agency was able to evacuate 130 of some 300 pallets’ worth of aid before the strike.
It is believed that Russia ordered regional authorities to recruit 409,000 contract soldiers this year. This high target is being done instead of calling for a general mobilization. It is believed that nearly 200,000 people signed contracts in the first half of this year.
Türkiye
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) criticized the newly proposed peace-process legislation. There is no mention of the term “Kurdish” or of the group laying down its arms; there is no statement within the draft about the release of Abdullah Ocalan, the PKK’s founding leader.
United Kingdom
Britain disconnected cameras on its K3 Scout naval drones after discovering that Chinese-made components were transmitting a signal back to China. The signals that the components were transmitting were “heartbeat communications,” confirming that the connected device is online and functioning. The MoD states that there is no evidence that data or systems were being accessed, compromised or transmitted externally.
Canada
The Canadian government is selling 10 retired CC-130H Hercules aircraft to B.C.-based aerospace company Coulson Aviation. These aircraft will be converted into firefighting aircraft, which will carry fire retardant. One aircraft will be fully converted by the time of Canada’s next fire season. The cost of the conversion will be paid by Coulson Aviation, as the company will contract out the aircraft.
Ireland-UAE
The UAE has arrested and extradited Daniel Kinahan, the crime boss of the Kinahan family, back to Ireland. The Kinahan family has become one of the largest suppliers of cocaine to Europe, with its long connections with the Colombian and Mexican drug cartels, as well as the Italian Mafia. Daniel Kinahan has lived in Dubai for the last decade, where he has managed his criminal empire, which is accused of co-financing drug shipments with Hezbollah and providing protection to an Iranian hitman. The criminal enterprise is estimated to be worth at least 1 billion euros.
Germany
Commercial shipping on the Rhine River is at risk as water levels drop. Historic low-water levels were recorded at several points on the river over the weekend. The low level means that the river will be split in two, with a northern section and a southern section still functioning, but this will be a major blow to logistics in the country.
