Iran War
Iran and Oman are close to an agreement on a route for ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials have also stated that the reopening of the Strait will depend on the US ending its blockade on Iranian ports. The proposed agreement will last 60-days.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledges that thousands were killed in the January protest crackdown. However, he rejected reports that tens of thousands were killed. There have been estimates that between 30,000 and 60,000 people were killed.
Yemen
The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the eighth and ninth attacks on Saudi oil tankers. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said that the Saudi tanker Wafa in the northern Red Sea was hit with “a number of ballistic missiles.” The group also claims that a total of 29 Saudi oil tankers have been forced to turn back, although this cannot be verified.
Lebanon
Israel launched fresh strikes in Lebanon and claimed it was in response to a Hezbollah ceasefire violation. Two Israeli reservists were killed, and four were seriously wounded in an IED attack. Lebanon reported that 1 person was killed and 12 injured after the Israeli strikes. The US is leading talks between Israel and Lebanon in Rome.
Russia
President Putin announced a major reshuffle of Russia’s top military leadership, with appointing new operational commanders in Ukraine, a unified logistics chief and a head for the newly established drone warfare branch.
Germany
A drone with an explosive device was found on Wednesday at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport. A police explosives disposal robot was used to remove the detonator. It was found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.
A 33-year-old Ukrainian man was arrested for allegedly spying on a defence company in Bavaria to prepare acts of sabotage. Authorities claim he is a “low-level” agent, a term used for people recruited by foreign intelligence services to carry out relatively simple tasks. No details on which foreign agency recruited the man.
Türkiye
Türkiye’s ruling alliance unveiled new legislation to reintegrate former Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants. It will protect many former militants from prosecution and suspend prison sentences for some others. The insurgency began in 1984 and has killed over 40,000 people. The PKK announced earlier that the group would disarm. There are still some who are skeptical of a lasting peace.
United States
The US Congressional Budget Office estimates that the first Trump-class nuclear-powered guided missile battleships (BBGN) would cost about $23.4 billion for the lead ship and an average of $18 billion for each of the 14 follow-on vessels. Overall, the program would cost about $275 billion in 2026 dollars between 2027 and 2056. The Trump-class battleship would have a 35,000 tons full-load displacement and carry an extensive mix of weapons, including vertical launch cells for anti-air, anti-ship and land-attack missiles, Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic missiles, high-powered lasers, a rail gun, and nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles.
Nigeria
More than 300 kidnapping victims were rescued in a major operation. 163 of them were kidnapped in February. The operation was carried out by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, which involved the army, the police force, and the Department of State Services. Kidnapping has become a significant financial source for Boko Haram fighters and local gangs, known as bandits.
North Korea
North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea. North Korea last conducted the test of a tactical ballistic missile over a month ago as well as new multiple rocket launchers and other weapons on June 25. North Korea has been making statements warning of new military deterrence measures, but a ballistic missile test is unlikely that.
