Iran War
The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia group, Kataib Hezbollah, stated that they will increase efforts to expand their arsenal and not disarm by the end of September. The Iraqi government set the deadline that militia groups need to disarm by the end of September, and some groups have agreed. The Iraqi government stated that they are in the process of preparing tighter measures in the coming days to prevent rockets or drones from being launched at neighbouring countries.
Yemen
An Indian-flagged ship was sunk by a projectile off the coast of Yemen. All 14 crew members were rescued. There was no comment from the Houthi rebels, but it is suspected that they sank the commercial vessel.
There are reports of desertions across six Yemeni governorates after the Houthi rebels failed to advance and government forces regained the initiative and took back several positions. It is estimated that up to 400 fighters abandoned their positions and returned home. There is a Houthi directive to hunt down these deserters.
United States
The US Defence Logistics Agency removed its tender for $300 million worth of battery-grade lithium carbonate. Last year, it cancelled its tender to buy cobalt. The lithium tender was announced in early July, was extended twice, and asked suppliers to fix prices for five years. The price of lithium carbonate has surged 20% this year alone.
Brazil-US
The US has cancelled the visa of the Brazilian ambassador to the US, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, in retaliation for two American diplomats who were denied visas to Brazil. The US also accuses Brazil of stalling the appointment of the Trump administration’s ambassador to Brazil. The US has offered to quickly reverse its decision should Brazil confirm the American ambassador.
China-US
China has announced export controls on drone exports to the US and has added 6 American companies and NGOs to a list of banned entities. This is in response to US bans on Chinese humanoid robots and drone imports.
SpaceX-The Moon
A piece of a SpaceX rocket that has been in space since last year is believed to have crashed into the moon early this morning. The crash is of minor scientific interest, with scientists hoping to analyze the pictures once they are available.
Syria
The Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) agreed to integrate into Syria’s Ministry of Interior as a counter-terrorism force. The YPJ is part of the wider People’s Protection Units (YPG), which served as the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Abdulkarim Omar, the Autonomous Administration’s representative in Damascus, stated that the Kurdish issue is political and needs to be addressed through political agreements and constitutional protections.
Ukraine-Russia War
A Russian barrage on Kyiv killed at least 17 people. There are images that suggest at least one of the missiles carried cluster munitions. Video is found within the social media wires section of today’s web post. Ukraine’s Air Force said that Russia launched 24 ballistic and hypersonic missiles and 115 Shahed-type drones. None of the missiles were intercepted, which highlights once again the critical shortage of air interceptor missiles in Ukraine.
Ukrainian intelligence believes that North Korea will deploy a missile unit to western Russia that could operate up to 120 ballistic missiles and six missile launchers for strikes on Ukraine. This will be a major military escalation for North Korea and a further deepening of military cooperation with Russia.
North Korea
North Korea denounced the US-led RIMPAC naval exercise and stated that it will respond with a “deterrence of a new level.” RIMPAC is the world’s largest naval exercise and takes place biennially around the Hawaiian Islands from June 24 to July 31.
Afghanistan
The Taliban halted some mining operations in Badakhshan amid growing unrest. The Taliban cited illegal mining, disorder and the seizure of mining sites as the reason. The mines in Badakhshan have been a point of contention between the Taliban and local authorities as the Taliban want more control. It is also where armed resistance has taken hold.
