Iran War
President Trump demonstrated his frustration with Iran after Iranian officials denied claims that new negotiations were taking place. Trump stated that the Iranians were duplicitous and that they should make a deal or surrender. This is an ongoing cycle that the Trump administration finds itself in. The promise of negotiations leads to Iranian denial, a flashpoint moment of another missile attack from Iran, or now the Houthis and the Iranian-backed Iraqi militia and then back to conflict. Iran has more time to wait out the Americans than Trump does to pressure Iran into a deal concerning denuclearization or on the Strait of Hormuz.
A Liberia-flagged dry bulk ship, Minoan Pioneer, has been hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz. The crew abandoned the vessel, and one crew member is missing. The projectile reportedly struck the engine room, and a fire broke out in the accommodation area.
Saudi Arabia is moving to ramp up oil flows in its East-West pipeline to full capacity of 7 million barrels per day to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. Aramco, Saudi’s oil giant, is expecting full capacity in the pipeline within days.
According to sources, the US Army has used up much of its stockpile of long-range missiles during the five-month war with Iran. These ground-to-ground missiles would be the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM). The sources declined to say how much of the munitions are left. This comes after previous reports of declining stockpiles of air interceptor missiles, such as Patriot and THAAD and of the global supply of Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Morocco
A new investigation claims that social media was utilized to create the mass migration that mobilized tens of thousands to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta last week. Morocco’s interior ministry stated that this was “not the result of temporary or spontaneous factors,” but resulted from “the interaction of several overlapping factors.” This included a social media campaign over various platforms, human trafficking networks and incorrect interpretations of legal and administrative information.
Yemen
The Houthis have deployed a surge of forces on various fronts as they anticipate a renewed campaign from government forces. Last week, Saudi ground forces in the country started to redeploy, sparking rumours that a new offensive against the Houthi rebels would be soon. There is disarray among Houthi commanders as they do not know on which front the new offensive will take place. In the past, they have been able to correctly anticipate where attacks come from.
Lebanon
The Lebanese military intercepted a shipment of 122mm Grad rockets that were smuggled from Syria into Lebanese territory. Grad rocket system is of Soviet design and fires multiple unguided rockets to saturate wide target areas with high explosives. It has been used by Hezbollah in the past.
Ukraine Russia War
President Zelensky at a meeting of Ukrainian ambassadors announced that the government will attempt to put enough diplomatic, economic and military pressure on Moscow for them to end the war before winter. There have been rumours of Russia preparing a mass mobilization before winter.
Ukraine hit two Wildberries warehouses in Moscow and St. Petersburg and the Syzran oil refinery. President Zelensky authorized new intelligence operations against Russian aggression. This comes after the 40-day operation of influence was authorized, which was a separate SBU operation designed to increase pressure on Russia and push Moscow toward ending its war against Ukraine.
Sudan
Sudan’s Security and Defense Council banned any army presence from mining areas, while ordering the confiscation of weapons and military vehicles found in violation of the directive. The council also established special courts to prosecute drug trafficking, human trafficking, and the smuggling of weapons and gold. This is seen as a measure to remove not only organized crime, but also corruption in the mining sector as the government attempts to reinforce state control of it.
Canada
Canada plans to cut its peacekeeping contribution and will rank about 100th globally. As of February, Canada contributed 27 police and military personnel in total. Canada, a once proud peacekeeping nation, will have less than that in the coming months. The government states that this is because of a defence policy shift toward Europe and Asia.
