Serbia
Shots were fired outside Serbia’s parliament. One person is injured and another is detained. There is also a fire at a tent structure outside. Supporters of President Aleksander Vucic erected the tents during anti-government protests.
US-Russia
The meetings between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have been cancelled, as well as the Hungary meet-up between Trump and Putin. President Trump stated that he has no interest in a wasted meeting and said he is the one who cancelled the meetings.
Russia
The Russian government is allocating money to raising two Cold War-era nuclear submarines from the Arctic seabed. The K-27 and the K-159 have been deemed the most urgent to raise from the seafloor for safe scrapping. Both are radioactive time bombs that could contaminate the Arctic fishing grounds.
Ukraine has used British Storm Shadow missiles to strike a Russian chemical plant. The Bryansk Chemical Plant produces gunpowder, explosives and rocket fuel components for the Russian military.
Russia held drills of the country’s strategic nuclear forces, demonstrating practice launches in all three arms of Russia’s nuclear triad. A Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was test-fired from the Plesetsk launch facility in northwestern Russia, a Sineva ICBM was launched by a submarine in the Barents Sea and Tu-95 strategic bombers fired long-range cruise missiles.
Canada
The German and Norwegian defence ministers met with Canadian ministers over the German-Norwegian bid to replace Canada’s submarine fleet. The competition is between the Type 212CD and South Korea’s KSS-III submarine. Canada intends to procure up to 12 submarines in a deal valued at tens of billions of dollars.
Canada cancels its plan to donate refurbished armoured vehicles to Ukraine. Canada has struggled to find equipment to send to Ukraine, and this deal to refurbish older light armoured vehicles seemed like a good policy. However, the deal, worth $250 million Canadian, is shrouded in secrecy, and the reasoning for the cancellation is unknown.
North Korea
North Korea fired its first ballistic missiles in the past five months – ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The missiles flew approximately 350km and probably landed in North Hamgyong Province rather than in the East Sea.
Pakistan
Details are emerging about the ceasefire between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban. Pakistan’s defence ministry stated that the ceasefire is contingent on the Taliban reining in terrorist groups that are attacking Pakistan from Afghanistan. This means that the Taliban will have to rein in the Balochistan Liberation Front and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.
