Iran War
Iran threatened pre-emptive strikes as the IRGC claimed that it has tighter control of the Strait of Hormuz than is being reported. The United States has questioned who is in charge of Iran after holding talks with Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, and foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi.
Iranian hardliners have filed a motion to impeach foreign minister Abbas Araghchi over supposed unsanctioned talks with the United States during the UN General Assembly meeting. The chief of the Supreme National Security Council disputes these claims, saying the talks had prior approval.
According to Axios, the US military has been told to prepare for the resumption of large-scale operations against Iran. There is no specified date yet, and President Trump has not fully decided to resume strikes on Iran. Axios journalist Barak Ravid believes that the strikes could happen before the US midterms, but also before the upcoming Israeli election on 27 October.
Yemen
Pakistani fighter jets have joined the Yemeni coalition and have been used to strike Houthi targets. One source says that Pakistan’s role will focus on degrading the threat of Houthi drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia. About 8,000 Pakistani troops are believed to be deployed in Saudi Arabia.
Lebanon
Iran provided Hezbollah $200 million to help Lebanese civilians displaced by this year’s war with Israel. Hezbollah received the money last month despite tightening economic sanctions. It is being reported that Hezbollah would use the funds to pay an initial $3,000 per family, and priority will go to those whose villages have been destroyed or are inaccessible due to Israeli occupation. This shows how terrorist and insurgent groups try to use good governance to win local support. Iran has never acknowledged funding Hezbollah, but it is widely known. It is estimated that in the first 10 months of 2025, Iran provided over $1 billion to Hezbollah.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon said that one of its outposts received small arms fire, but there were no casualties. UNIFIL has been deployed in Lebanon since 1978, but under US pressure, it will conclude in December. UNIFIL currently has 7,500 blue helmets from around 50 countries.
Russia
The World Health Organization said it cannot fully assess the plague situation in Irkutsk. There are reports of a “second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause” at the institute involved. Russian authorities claim the situation is safe, but calls for greater transparency are growing. Mongolia has implemented “health surveillance and monitoring measures” at the border between the two countries.
Ukraine-Russia War
Ukraine’s foreign ministry said it is working with partners on five ceasefire proposals, including a full truce, Black Sea security and energy infrastructure. The foreign ministry claims the proposals would benefit both Russia and Ukraine. Aside from the full truce, the partial ceasefires target energy infrastructure, grain, and commercial exports.
At least 30 people have been killed, and 18 injured after a Russian strike hit two buses in Kramatorsk. The city has suspended public transport after the attack.
Lithuania
President Trump said the United States will consider Lithuania’s proposal to host American forces in the country permanently. Lithuania based its proposal on the increase of hybrid threats emanating from Russia, drone incursions, and the instrumentalization of migration from Belarus. This comes as Poland signals that the US has agreed to permanently base troops in Poland.
Denmark
Denmark claims that Russia carried out sabotage operations against Danish companies supplying Ukraine. Last year, drone activity near Denmark’s airports disrupted air traffic. European intelligence agencies claim that Russia will ramp up its hybrid warfare activities on the continent to test their resolve in supporting Ukraine.
Canada
Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Office penned a primer report on Canadian defence spending. The PBO stated that defence spending could reach $163.6 billion by 2035 under the Liberal government’s proposal to meet NATO’s benchmark target of five per cent of GDP. The Hague Summit Declaration sets 5% of GDP for defence: 3.5% for the military and an additional 1.5% for defence-related infrastructure projects, including critical infrastructure and networks, Civil preparedness and resilience, and industry investments.
Ethiopia
There are reports that Ethiopian drones have targeted Eritrean troops in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated as Ethiopia claims that Eritrea supports the Tigray rebels. Eritrea claims that Ethiopia supports opponents in their country and wants to invade to secure direct access to the Red Sea. The two countries fought a border war between 1998 and 2000.
