Iran War
The Institute for Science and International Security released a report saying that activity has resumed at Minzadayi, a heavily secured compound northeast of Tehran that Israel attacked in March. Minzadayi is believed to be a nuclear weapons development facility. Satellite imagery shows regular vehicle activity in a cleanup operation to remove rubble and debris.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claims that Iran has lost complete control over the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio added that the Iranian economy is in “total and complete freefall”.
Yemen
Saudi Arabian air defence shot down a ballistic missile north of Riyadh. The Yemeni government claims that the Houthi rebels also targeted Aden’s international airport with two ballistic missiles. The coalition is targeting Houthi ballistic missile supply, with reports of a depot containing 20 ballistic missiles being destroyed.
The Yemeni army also claims that they have seized new positions in the Haifan district south of Taiz province.
Israel
Today marks the three-year anniversary of the 7 October attacks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims that Hamas will try to disrupt the upcoming Israeli 27 October election. Some see Netanyahu’s warnings as a method to retain public support through fear and that this election will be a referendum on how his government handled the 7 October attacks and the subsequent operations in Gaza, Lebanon and the wider Middle East.
Russia
Russia denied that it is imposing anti-plague measures after a worker at an anti-plague institute died and nearly 200 people were placed in isolation. A maternity hospital in Irkutsk has started screening pregnant patients for possible plague exposure. The centre also imposed a mask requirement and temporarily barred partners from attending births.
As Russia continues not to provide information, suspicions will rise internationally. There are interesting facts coming to light, for example, that the FSB were part of the rounding up of the potentially infected. If the institute worker did indeed contract pneumonic plague, why was she not wearing the proper protective gear or followed contamination protocols?
The US Embassy in Moscow urged US citizens to leave Russia over plague suspicions. The US State Department also reiterated that its Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Russia has been in place since January 2022, on the eve of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine-Russia War
Russia launched one of its largest strikes on Ukraine, killing at least 21 civilians, on the eve of the 74th birthday of President Vladimir Putin. President Zelensky warned that Russia was planning a massive attack, but the state of Ukraine’s air defences could not fend it off completely.
Poland
Sweden will send Patriot missiles to Poland to bolster NATO’s eastern flank. Sweden will be relieving the tasks carried out by the Netherlands. The Patriots and 100 personnel will protect the Rzeszów-Jasionka logistics hub used to send aid to Ukraine. The mission starts on 1 December and will last seven months.
Norway
Norway’s 2027 Defence Budget proposes nearly $8.9 billion (85 billion kroner) in new defence and financial support for Ukraine under its Nansen Support Program. Including next year’s funding, Norway has provided roughly $36 billion to Ukraine. Ukraine faces a nearly $40 billion funding gap next year.
United Kingdom
British police have arrested a seventh person in connection with the incident at RAF Fairford. None of the seven young men have been officially charged with any crimes. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications that Iran was involved, but details remain unclear.
Mali
Tuareg rebel forces announced that they are withdrawing from the strategic town of Kidal following airstrikes carried out by the Russian Africa Corps. The Malian Army also announced a new offensive in the Kidal region. The Malian Army, supported by Russian paramilitary forces, reentered Kidal. Back in 2023, the Malian Army and the Russian Wagner Group captured the town from the Tuaregs. Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and regional al Qaeda affiliate, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, known as JNIM, seized the town again in nationwide attacks in April this year.
Ethiopia
Locals report that Eritrean troops have been deployed around a town in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which it denies. Reports indicate that Eritrean troops with heavy weaponry and trucks may be near the Ethiopian city of Adigrat, which is 40 kilometres from the border.
Laos
Satellite imagery reveals that light attack aircraft and military vehicles have arrived at the new China-Laos joint training facility. Many are watching the construction of the new facility and believe that it is China’s first fully fledged overseas military base in Southeast Asia. China has a limited network of overseas facilities beyond the South China Sea. Laos shares a border with China and has infrastructure links, including a railway, to support logistics.
Afghanistan
The Afghan Taliban foreign minister discussed security cooperation with Russia’s security chief, Sergei Shoigu. Amir Khan Muttaqi stressed expanding security cooperation and developing economic and trade relations between the two countries. Russia has propped up the Taliban regime by repairing Soviet-era military equipment, and there are some rumours of Taliban special forces being trained by Russia.
