Iran War
The chief of Saudi Arabia’s Aramco said rebuilding global oil inventories while meeting demand could take up to two years once the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens and market confidence returns.
Transit through the Strait of Hormuz is on track to return to pre-war levels. Kuwait reported producing about 2 million barrels a day, compared with about 2.6 million before the conflict began in late February.
Yemen War
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye activated their collective deterrence measures under the trilateral Mecca Agreement. In a joint statement, the three countries also agreed to rapidly deploy military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia. The statements did not detail the forces involved or specify their role. But these are more likely to be air defence assets.
Over 100 warplanes took part in the opening of Operation Yemen Dawn, destroying 324 targets. The coalition is providing air support to Yemeni government forces on the ground. The Yemeni government claims that it has recaptured the city of Mokha from the Houthi rebels.
Iraq
Kurdistan security forces arrested two dozen ISIS members. According to Kurdish officials, these members were planning to “reorganize and receive pledges of allegiance from group members, plant explosive devices and carry out bombings inside Halabja province, and monitor [Kurdish] security forces and open fire on them during training and exercises with heavy and medium weapons.” Kurdish security also seized RPG launchers, rockets and propellant charges, a mortar round, hand grenades, AK-47 rifles with magazines and hundreds of rounds, two pistols, military binoculars, and military uniforms and gear. Demonstrating that the ISIS threat in Iraq has not been abolished.
Ukraine-Russia War
A Turkish grain ship sank in the Black Sea after being hit by a drone some 20 miles from the Romanian shore. Two sailors were killed, while 11 others were rescued and one is missing. Romanian vessels and helicopters took part in a major rescue operation after the ship caught fire from the blasts. Romanian authorities have yet to name a suspect for the attack, but Ukrainian President Zelenskyy blamed Russia.
Drones hit two commercial vessels off Bulgaria’s coast. A search is underway for the crew of a cargo ship that sank. The crew of a Bulgarian ferry in the area saw an explosion on the first ship and sailed to the scene. They found an overturned lifeboat and life jackets but no one from the crew. The crew of the second cargo ship were rescued. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said that the attack was completely unacceptable, but did not say who launched the drones.
South Korea shipped 176,000 tons of oil to Russia aboard sanctioned vessels in July and August. The vessels were bound for Japan and Singapore but instead sailed to Russian ports. The deliveries were largely of diesel as Russian refineries have been under attack by Ukraine.
Germany
German police arrested a former head of Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, August Hanning. Hanning served as the agency’s chief from December 1998 to November 2005, then moved to the Federal Interior Ministry, where he worked as state secretary until November 2009. According to the German prosecutor’s office, he has been charged with alleged espionage, disclosure of state secrets, attempted treason, and working as a secret service agent. Another man was charged on suspicion of providing Hanning with hundreds of classified documents in exchange for payment. It is alleged that Hanning used these documents in his private consulting work.
France
French President Emmanuel Macron observed the test firing of a new nuclear-capable missile without a warhead. France test-fired its M51.3 nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine for the first time. In March, Macron stated that France will expand its nuclear arsenal and offer a nuclear umbrella with the short-term deployment of nuclear-capable assets on allied territory.
United States
President Trump approved a firing squad execution for Nidal Hasan, the US Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009. It will be the first military execution since 1961. Hasan opened fire at a medical facility in Fort Hood, Texas, which was a staging point for soldiers to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan. Hasan spoke with American-Yemeni al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was subsequently killed in a drone strike during the Obama administration. A time and location for the execution has not been chosen by the US Army.
Canada
Two Canadian soldiers were removed from their duties after being arrested for charges relating to kidnapping, organized crime and the theft of firearms and weapons. The two soldiers hold the rank of bombardier and are members of the 7th Toronto Regiment, a reserve artillery unit in Canada’s 32 Canadian Brigade. They will remain in the Canadian Armed Forces, pending a review.
The Canadian government plans to turn the new Defence Investment Agency into a Crown Corporation to speed up military purchases. This move may reduce bureaucracy around defence procurement, mean fewer ministers to report to, and allow it to operate more independently. However, questions will remain about the transparency and accountability of the new defence procurement Crown corporation.
Afghanistan
During Russian multinational military exercises, North Korea and the Afghan Taliban held talks on military cooperation. According to the Taliban, the two sides discussed bilateral relations, the exchange of military experience, specialized training and potential areas of cooperation. This was the first reported instance of direct contact between the Afghan Taliban and North Korea. Russia has been deepening its ties with the Taliban as well, but the Taliban declared that they will remain neutral in the Ukraine War.
