Iran War

President Trump threatened Iran with new economic measures. Trump described it as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country”. Trump also threatened to impose sanctions on any country that does business with Iran, notably this would affect China, Iraq and Türkiye.  It is not the first time that Trump has threatened economic fury against Iran.

Ukraine-Russia War

President Putin ordered the government to rebuild commercial warehouses damaged or destroyed by Ukrainian attacks. Ukraine has conducted drone attacks on at least two dozen warehouses of Russia’s top online retailer Wildberries. Putin did not name Wildberries specifically, but he said the Russian economy continues to grow modestly.

Grain shipments from the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea have been reduced by 97% due to Ukrainian and Russian attacks on shipping and port infrastructure. Last year, Russia and Ukraine exported 7.2 million tons of grain in a month.

Protesters have been demonstrating for over a month to reinstate Mykhailo Fedorov as defence minister. But after Fedorov’s announcement that there should be a wartime election, many of his followers are rejecting and criticizing his call for elections.

Gaza

Documents show that the United States will provide $206 million for a peacekeeping force in Gaza. $200 million will go toward the International Stabilization Force’s (ISF) equipment, infrastructure, vehicles, and operational costs, and the remaining $6 million will repurpose US armoured vehicles to support the force. The full costs of the peacekeeping mission are, of course, unknown.

Syria

After Israeli airstrikes on a Syrian airbase, Türkiye’s defence ministry stated that it will continue to support Syria’s efforts to develop its military capacity and infrastructure. Israel struck the Abu al-Duhur military airfield eight times after a Turkish military delegation toured the base for preliminary efforts to bring the military airbase back into service.

Sudan

318 fighters from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces defected to the Sudanese army. The group arrived with up to 50 combat vehicles and announced its decision to join the armed forces in Al-Dabba locality in Northern State. Lieutenant-Colonel Musa Ali Ahmed, identified as the leader of the defectors, attributed their decision to what he described as the lack of institutional structures within the RSF.  Defections from the RSF have increased recently.

Mali

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mali’s military junta leader President Assimi Goita spoke by phone about strengthening security in Mali and the wider Sahel region. They discussed economic and humanitarian ties, but mostly focused on the ongoing security situation in Mali.

North Korea

President Trump announced that he will meet with Kim Jong-un later this year. Trump also revealed that North Korea has 57 nuclear weapons. South Korea estimates that North Korea has between 80 and 120 nuclear weapons. Trump has reportedly been pushing his aides to meet with the North Korean leader. Trump claims he has been in contact with Kim Jong-un, something Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, was unaware of. Kim Yo Jong also said North Korea is focused on the US-South Korean military exercise, not that the exercise has been scaled down. She dismissed the shortening of the drills and said: “The provocative, aggressive nature of the drills won’t change even though their duration and size were reduced.”

North Korea fired 10 short-range ballistic missiles. North Korea often fires ballistic missiles when the US and South Korea conduct military drills.

Pakistan

Pakistani security forces killed five terrorists in the Panjgur region of Balochistan. It is believed that they were involved in robbery, extortion, kidnappings and targeted killings; a large quantity of weapons, ammunition and equipment was recovered. This is part of a wider Operation Raddul Fitna 3 that is targeting militant threats in the region.
