Iran War
President Trump stated that the US could seize Iran’s Kharg Island. Trump told the Financial Times on Monday that “maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t.” We have a lot of options…It would also mean we had to be there (on Kharg Island) for a while.” Our editor, Stewart Webb, published an article as to why seizing Kharg Island could very well be a big mistake.
Spain shut down its airspace to US aircraft that could be involved in the war with Iran. Other European allies have permitted the US to use their airspace for logistical routes, but Spain has been opposed to Trump’s Middle East intervention.
A rocket attack occurred at an Iraqi army base in the Baghdad airport complex. The attack was carried out with 122mm Grad rockets and destroyed an Antonov-132 aircraft belonging to the Iraqi Air Force.
Türkiye signalled that it would intervene against Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq if they joined a ground attack against Iran. The warning is issued to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its Iranian affiliate, the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK). Turkish President Erdogan told Trump that he would not permit the use of “terrorist organizations” against Iran.
Yemen
The Houthi rebels fired a ballistic missile toward Israel on Saturday. Fears that the Houthis will attempt to close cargo transit of the Red Sea have emerged. Aside from the one ballistic missile, there have been no further indications of attacks by the Houthis. That attack was more about signalling than entering the conflict.
India
Indian security forces have captured a commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Shabbir Ahmed Lone, after a two-month pursuit. Lone is accused of plotting terrorist attacks in India. Arrested in 2007 with a cache of weapons, he spent over a decade in Tihar Jail before securing bail in 2019 and fleeing to Bangladesh, after that he became more involved in LeT.
Cuba
A Russian oil tanker arrived in Cuba to relieve the oil and energy shortage. The Trump administration allowed the ship to enter Cuban waters. Essentially, Trump abandoned his own fuel blockade. There are no indications of further oil and energy shipments as of yet. Trump did say, to reporters, that “If a country wants to send some oil into Cuba right now, I have no problem with that.”
Canada
The CEO of Saab stated that Canada and Saab are still in “intensive talks” over the purchase of the JA39 Gripen. No timeline has been given for the government’s review of the F-35 purchase. Saab is only providing more information about the Gripen and potential economic benefits.
Israel-US
Israeli media is reporting that Israel is planning to propose the development of a US military base inside Israel. The Israelis will reportedly allow existing US bases in the Middle East to relocate to Israel, as well the creation of new bases for the US.
Afghanistan
The Afghanistan Freedom Front continued its attacks on the Taliban. The group paused for Ramadan, and on 29 March it attacked a Taliban border unit in Baharak district of Badakhshan province, killing four Taliban members. Amanuddin Mansoor, a Badakhshani Taliban commander, said in a speech that people are asking him how long the Taliban government will last. There are fears that resistance in the north will be bolstered by outside actors.
