Iran War
President Trump expects peace talks to resume with Iran in the coming week after he rejected Iran’s peace proposal. Iran continues its stance that it is ready for war as President Trump mulls resuming air strikes on the country.
Iranian state media reported that Iran’s delegation to the UN General Assembly has no plans to engage in talks with the US. The wording is interesting, as the UN General Assembly meeting runs from September 22 to 28. This opens the possibility that talks may occur after today’s UN General Assembly meeting closes.
The IRGC claims that it captured a second underwater drone. The IRGC claims that a REMUS 600 has been handed over to Iranian military experts “to retrieve its data,” but the US military denies the claim.
Yemen
The Yemeni government claims that it killed or wounded over 2,316 Houthi members, while four Iranian experts specializing in operating and launching drones and missiles were killed in Taiz Governorate. The presence of Iranian trainers has been known, but this is the first time since the Yemen conflict has escalated that the government has announced that it targeted Iranian personnel. Government forces used aircraft, drones, missiles, field artillery and rocket launchers.
Ukraine-Russia War
The Ukrainian military claims that it has delivered four tons of food and supplies to the town of Oleshky by drones. Oleshky has been cut off from Ukrainian supplies, and residents have reported food shortages. The governor of Kherson Oblast said drone food deliveries have been happening since March.
European foreign ministers are meeting to discuss how to strengthen the bloc’s response to hybrid attacks. The emergency security protocol will help member states respond when they identify a hybrid threat. EU countries would then convene to coordinate their response.
United Kingdom
British counter-terrorism police are investigating a major incident near RAF Fairford, which is also used by the US Air Force, after arresting five men on suspicion of “preparing a terrorist act. A local farmer phoned the police after she saw a group of hooded and masked men running into the fields. Security has been stepped up at US bases in the UK. Police are examining an Iran link as they question the five men.
Switzerland
Voters in Switzerland firmly rejected a proposal to change the constitution to adopt a stricter form of neutrality. All cantons and about 70% of the vote rejected the proposal. The rejection means Switzerland can still impose economic sanctions on a case-by-case basis. Switzerland adopted its neutrality stance in 1815 at the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
Ethiopia
The Ethiopian government accuses Eritrea and Sudan of supporting the Tigray rebels. Ethiopia’s army chief made the accusation on the army’s YouTube channel. It is not the first time that the Ethiopian government has accused Eritrea or Sudan of supporting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The TPLF ruled all of Ethiopia from 1991 to 2018 before being sidelined with Abiy’s rise to prime minister.
Afghanistan
The Afghan Taliban claim that it killed 28 fighters and wounded 32 in the eastern province of Nuristan after a group crossed from Pakistan. The Taliban also claim that Pakistani militias are supporting opposition fighters and that most of them were former Afghan government security personnel. Pakistan’s foreign ministry denies this accusation.
The Afghanistan Freedom Front and the Taliban clashed in the Kamdesh district of Nuristan. According to the AFF, the Taliban targeted their positions with drones. The group claim that it captured several checkpoints in the counter-attack as Taliban forces retreated. The AFF claims that it killed 37 Taliban fighters and wounded 24 others in clashes in the Kamdesh district of Nuristan and the Nari district of Kunar.
South Korea
A recent poll shows that less than 40 percent of South Koreans believe that unification with North Korea is necessary. The poll, commissioned by Seoul National University’s Institute for Peace and Unification Studies, found that 39 percent of respondents said unification is necessary, down from 41.1 percent last year. It also found that 32.2 percent of respondents viewed unification as unnecessary, up from 30.4 percent last year. The institute first conducted its survey in 2007, when 15.1 percent of respondents said unification was not necessary, essentially doubling in less than 20 years.
