Northern Norway played host to a huge NATO force of 20000 soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen from 14 countries. The UK’s contribution was a powerful amphibious Task Group led by HMS ALBION with Commodore Paul Bennett, Commander Amphibious Task Group at the helm. Monday the 21 Feb was an important day in the exercise when distinguished visitors gathered to see the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Army units in action. The demonstration of combat power was centred on a beach landing where men and equipment were ferried ashore by Landing Craft and Helicopter. All timed to perfection, the visitors from both the UK and Norwegian Ministry of Defence, witnessed a coordinated assault. <i>This image is available for non-commercial, high resolution download at www.defenceimages.mod.uk subject to terms and conditions. Canada-Germany

Prime Minister Carney is travelling to Germany to discuss the strengthening of defence and security ties. Submarines will most likely be on the agenda. If you have not read DefenceReport’s report on Canada’s submarine replacement, the link can be found here.

Ukraine

The European Parliament approved the 90 billion Euro loan to Ukraine. This loan will secure Ukraine’s budget for the next two years as the fourth anniversary of the war looms.  The loan will strengthen its defence capabilities, ensure the uninterrupted operation of public services, and contribute to the country’s resilience and closer integration with Europe’s defence-industrial base.

Russia

As the Russian state media regulator Roskomnadzor imposed restrictions on the social app, Telegram, soldiers on the frontline are complaining of disruption to communication. Russian forces rely on the app to communicate and coordinate by sharing images and videos. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated to reporters that it is difficult to “imagine that frontline communications are maintained via Telegram or some other messenger.”

United Kingdom-Norway

The United Kingdom announced that it will increase its presence in Norway from 1,000 personnel to 2,000 over the next three years to counter the Russian threat. The UK and other European nations are increasing their presence and number of exercises in the region. In December, the UK and Norway signed a pact to coordinate the hunt for Russian submarines.

Iran

There are reports that Iran is filling in the entrances to its nuclear sites as a measure to block potential US special forces attacks on the facilities. Tensions continue to mount in the region as the United States continues to move in military assets into the region, and talks have stalled.

Other social media websites and apps have been removed in Russia and may be done to further slow down Telegram
