United States
US Space Force said it has deployed weapons in space. A US Space Force spokesman said: “The US has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action.” “Space control encapsulates the mission areas required to contest and control the space domain — employing kinetic and non-kinetic means to affect adversary capabilities,” the statement said, adding that “these capabilities can be employed for offensive and defensive purposes.” The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 bans weapons of mass destruction in orbit, but there has been a space race on having the capability to target rivals’ satellites, which are key for military communications, surveillance and navigation.
The Defense Department’s inspector general confirmed that the US military is in a munitions shortfall because of the war with Iran. As of 30 June, Operation Epic Fury (OEF) had an estimated cost of $33.4 billion, including $22.3 billion spent on expended munitions. The report said: “The munitions expenditure on OEF has resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply.”
Iran War
President Trump again says that Iran wants to make a deal, but will choose whether the US will engage in talks. This comes as the average price of diesel reached an all-time high of $6.23 a gallon. Trump added that the conflict might end shortly after the midterms and that fuel prices will plummet. The Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary said talks will occur only if Iran’s conditions are met.
Oil tanker rates have also hit an all-time high of $ 1 million a day. Oil tankers transiting from the Persian Gulf to China are being hired at $1.035 million a day, according to data from the Baltic Exchange in London on Monday. Ships carrying oil from Saudi Arabia and avoiding the Red Sea and the Houthi rebels will have to take a 30-day detour around Africa.
South Korea and the United States are holding senior-level defence talks this week as South Korea weighs sending a naval deployment to the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, South Korea sent a team to the UAE to assess the security situation near the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump downplayed a report that Chinese entities helped Iran by providing satellite imagery of a US base in Jordan before an attack which killed three US troops. Trump said that because the US spies on China, China has the right to spy on the US, quoted as saying: “When they say China spies on us, I say you’re right and we spy on them too.”
Yemen
Yemeni government forces counterattacked Houthi positions west of Taiz. Government forces retook two villages and a hilltop near Taiz. This comes after government forces suffered serious setbacks with the Houthi rebels taking the city of Mokha and several islands within the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
US Vice President JD Vance claims that the US government is in direct talks with the Houthi rebels. Vance says he feels the government is on top of the situation.
Ukraine-Russia War
President Trump asked President Zelensky to halt attacks on Russian diesel infrastructure. Later, Trump claimed that both Russia and Ukraine are willing to halt attacks on energy infrastructure altogether. A post from Zelensky on social media appeared to deny that Ukraine agreed to any deal. As winter approaches, Zelensky is asking partners for details on what they will do to ensure Russia does not continue targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as it has in the past. Zelensky did signal that Ukraine would be willing to de-escalate if Russia halts its strikes, but that’s putting the ball in Russia’s court diplomatically.
Ukraine believes Russian Geran drones are using Belarus’ LTE networks, along with a network of repeater stations on Belarusian territory, to access stable signals. Russia recently sent hundreds of the petrol-powered drones along Ukraine’s northern border. President Zelensky warned Belarus this summer and issued a formal ultimatum to take the equipment down.
Denmark
A Russian warship fired two emergency flares toward a Danish military helicopter, with one passing close to the aircraft in the Baltic Sea. The government condemned the incident as completely unacceptable and summoned Russia’s ambassador. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it fit the broader pattern of increasingly aggressive Russian behaviour in Europe.
Netherlands
Major train disruptions occurred in the Netherlands as objects were found placed on the tracks at several locations. ProRail did not say what the objects were, but reports say pipes were found attached to the line. ProRail says it was deliberate. Today the Dutch government presents its annual budget to parliament and the reigning monarch gives a speech. Thousands travel to The Hague to watch the royal family ride through the city in horse-drawn carriages.
Finland
EU leaders met in Finland to plan a path forward over shipping, resources and security in the Arctic amid pressure from the US, China and Russia. Talks focused on emerging shipping lanes, mineral deposits, and security risks involving Russia, China, and the United States. Russia has been investing heavily in developing its Northern Sea Route, which China and South Korea sent cargo ships through this year. Mali
At least 50 soldiers and five Russian Africa Corps mercenaries were killed in an assault on the military camp in Dioura in the Mopti region. There are also reports that the death toll may be higher, around 60 to 80, but also reports of several dozen being taken prisoner. The previous day, JNIM jihadists assaulted the camp and returned the next day. No additional reinforcements were sent to the camp.
