Austria
An ex-intelligence officer has been found guilty of spying for Russia. Egisto Ott was sentenced to four years in prison, and he still denies the charges. Russia was able to gather secret information and a large amount of personal data from police databases between 2015 and 2020.
Ukraine
President Zelensky warned Belarus of consequences if the country becomes more involved in Russia’s war in Ukraine. Belarus and Russia are conducting joint nuclear exercises, but there have been suspicions that Russia could launch an invasion into Ukraine from the north via Belarus. Belarus allowed Russia to use its territory as a launch pad for the 2022 invasion.
Mali
Dozens of vehicles outside the capital have been torched by jihadists ahead of Eid al-Adha. JNIM, an al-Qaeda affiliate, and Tuareg rebels launched a major offensive last month. JNIM pledged to impose another blockade on the capital, Bamako, after imposing a fuel blockade there last year.
Fuel, livestock and other goods are becoming in short supply in the capital.
Afghanistan
An Afghan resistance group carried out a rocket attack on the Kabul military airport. The group released a video and claims that the attack was precise and that a major fire broke out.
The Taliban dispatched convoys of forces and military vehicles to Badakhshan province. Tensions have increased in the gold mining province in recent days. The Afghanistan Freedom Front is also known to be operating in the area.
Taiwan
US Navy Secretary Hung Cao stated that the $14 billion weapon sale to Taiwan has been put on pause due to the war with Iran. Cao told the committee that “Right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury – which we have plenty,” The sale has been waiting for President Trump’s approval for months and includes air defence missiles, such as Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3, and surface-to-air missile systems.
Pakistan
Pakistani security forces killed 23 Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan militants in multiple intelligence-based operations conducted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Weapons, ammunition and explosives were recovered.
Poland
President Donald Trump pledged to send an additional 5,000 US troops to the country. This comes after last week, when the US cancelled the deployment of 4,000 troops to the country.
North Korea
After Trump and Putin’s trips to China, it seems that Chinese President Xi will travel to North Korea as early as next week. The two countries are celebrating the 65th anniversary of the signing of a comprehensive treaty of cooperation. China also shares the US ambition for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, and it may be discussed between Xi and Kim Jong-un.
