Iran Ceasefire
Much pomp and circumstance has been made by the Trump administration that a US-Iran deal is close. There is a hint that the deal between the US and Iran will not touch on the nuclear aspect, as Rudio stated that Iran would “enter into a very real, significant, time-limited negotiation on the nuclear matter”. Iran disputes the claim that the deal is close.
Trump told Netanyahu that no deal would be made without Iran dismantling its nuclear programme.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also accused Hezbollah of attempting to drag Lebanon back into chaos. Earlier, Naim Qassem, the leader of Hezbollah, said that “the people have the right to go down onto the streets and to bring down the government”. Hezbollah is attempting to sow instability, but also to grow and gauge its support in Lebanon.
French President Emmanuel Macron had a rare phone call with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to dissuade him from escalating the war with Ukraine. There are mounting concerns that Belarus will join Russia in its war against Ukraine.
Iran’s Supreme Leader is in a secret bunker and is only reachable through couriers. Mojtaba Khamenei was injured during US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 and has not been seen or heard from since.
Ukraine-Russia War
The UK, France, Italy, Spain and Canada have rejected a plan for NATO countries to contribute 0.25% of their GDP to military aid to Ukraine. NATO members are trying to meet the 5% GDP commitment under the Hague conference – an additional 0.25% would be a domestic political nightmare for many.
Türkiye
Turkish police stormed the Republican People’s Party (CHP) building in Ankara after party members blocked the entrances with makeshift barricades. The police raided the main opposition party after the court dismissed its leadership over allegations of vote-buying. Party leader Özgür Özel vowed to defy the court decision, which ruled that Kemal Kilicdaroğlu, a 77-year-old party veteran who was defeated by Erdoğan in the 2023 presidential election, should be the head of the party.
UN Peacekeeping
Recent figures show that UN peacekeeping contributions are declining. This is due to geopolitical instability and a reduction in the UN peacekeeping budget; 79,000 personnel were deployed in international peacekeeping missions at the end of 2025, its lowest point in 25 years and 49% lower than in 2016. Large donor countries failed to meet their financial commitments, SIPRI said, resulting in a $2 billion (€1.7 billion) funding shortfall.
Pakistan
A train carrying military personnel was targeted by a bomb, 20 people have been killed and 70 others. Three coaches and the engine were overturned while travelling through Quetta, the capital of Balochistan in western Pakistan. Suggesting that it was the Balochistan Liberation Army that undertook this attack.
Taiwan
China has deployed more than 100 navy, coast guard and other vessels in regional waters stretching from the Yellow Sea to the South China Sea and Western Pacific. This occurred after the meeting between President Xi and President Trump. There has been a tense standoff between the Chinese and Taiwanese coast guards.
Myanmar
Myanmar’s military launched a renewed offensive in several border regions, including one that has critical rare earth deposits and other vital trade routes. Myanmar’s military chief Ye Win Oo is making an aggressive push to reclaim territory from ethnic rebels.
Japan
Around 20 people were injured at a luxury shopping mall in Tokyo after a man sprayed a substance inside. Injuries appear to be light, but Japan still reels from the sarin gas attack in 1995 by the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which killed 14 people and made more than 5,800 ill.
