Iran War
Satellite imagery shows that new construction is occurring near Iranian missile sites. It appears that Iran is undertaking significant new construction near at least two of its major missile sites and repairing damage after US and Israeli airstrikes. Iranian state media purports that Iran’s missile capabilities are still intact by showing dozens of missiles at the entrance of an underground facility.
Russia will supply Iran with at least 90 light multipurpose guided missile launchers for its helicopters. The LMUR is designed for Russia’s Mi-28 helicopters, which Iran already possesses. The sale of helicopter missile launchers has little impact on the Iran War, but it does signal the deepening relationship between Russia and Iran, as Russia is providing military equipment during Iran’s heightened tensions with the United States.
Yemen War
Saudi Arabia denies a Wall Street Journal report that the Houthi rebels demanded $51 billion from them. According to the Wall Street Journal, Saudi officials reached out to the Houthis to ask what it would take for them to stop their cross-border attacks. The Houthis purportedly replied with that exact number and asked for recognition of its government. Operations against the Houthi rebels continue, and Saudi air defences have intercepted drones and missiles in the past few days.
Mecca Defence Pact
Türkiye’s parliament ratified the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. This means that Türkiye can now send military assistance to Saudi Arabia. It is unclear what Türkiye will send, but it may follow what Pakistan, France and the United Kingdom have done and provide only air defence assets to defend the kingdom, without taking part in offensive operations against the Houthi rebels.
Russia
Reports claim that a Russian satellite approached a Finnish commercial satellite last month, which may have been a simulated attack. US Under Secretary of State Thomas DiNanno said that Russia’s Cosmos 2612 military satellite had been “intentionally maneuvering dangerously close to a commercial satellite” in conduct “consistent with on-orbit weapons operations.” The Finnish satellite in question is operated by ICEYE and provides radar imagery to Western governments and militaries, including Ukraine.
Ukraine-Russia War
Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure resulted in power outages in seven regions. The situation is most difficult in the capital region, as utility workers still had to impose network restrictions because of heavy damage.
President Trump met privately with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev after he appeared with Ukrainian representatives at a White House event hosted by US First Lady Melania Trump. Trump did not attend his wife’s event, which highlighted the brief ceasefire in Oleshky. Trump did not disclose what was discussed, but hinted that a deal to end the war in Ukraine could occur soon.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the war will likely end in a compromise, highlighting that outright victory is unlikely for either side. Rutte warned, however, that peace in Ukraine would free up Russian troops that could then be redeployed to put strain on Europe as threats of Russian aggression continue.
France
Approximately 600,000 protesters took part in protests over the cost of living. The protests were mostly peaceful, unlike previous ones. The five unions that organized the protests represent public and private sectors, and are calling on the government to address deteriorating public services and high prices of goods.
European Union
Bomb threats continue into their fourth day for European flights. On Thursday, at least 25 flights were affected, up from the day before. This is affecting European air travel as those threats have to be taken seriously. Flights continue to be diverted, and fighter jets have been scrambled to intercept.
United States
Russian diesel tankers bound for the United States changed course. Two of the three Russian diesel cargoes bound for the U.S. have now diverted to other destinations. One reportedly altered its signal to “Brazil.” Talisman, a sanctioned Russian-flagged vessel, diverted to the Mediterranean and signalled “for orders” off the coast of Algeria. A third is suspected to change its course as American buyers have so far declined to receive the Russian cargoes due to legal threats from state and federal officials.
Canada
Many questions remain about the Canadian government defence budget, as the new federal budget plan projects spending only through 2030. However, the Carney government said that it aims to meet its NATO spending commitments by 2035. The budget does not explain how it will do that. The budget projects that by 2030, Canada will spend about 2.6% of GDP on military spending and an additional 1.4% on defence-related infrastructure. Without a detailed longer-term forecast, Carney’s commitment is in doubt, and it will also affect how defence companies ramp up production and investment amid uncertain government commitments.
Climate Change
The UN warns that three-quarters of the displaced people, approximately 90 million, face severe exposure to climate-related hazards. This comes as the next Global Climate Summit is in Türkiye in a few days. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says that those affected face severe droughts, deadly floods and extreme heat.
Ethiopia
Clashes between armed groups in southern Ethiopia have led to tens of thousands fleeing to Kenya. The Ethiopian Somalis and the Oromos have been fighting over control of the town of Moyale since October 18, driving around 50,000 people across the border into Kenya, according to local authorities. It also seems the Ethiopian government has been ignoring the conflict in the south and focusing solely on the conflict in the north in the Tigray region.
Nigeria
Nigeria’s military ruled out any ceasefire with Boko Haram and the Islamic State West African Province. In September, reports said the Nigerian government and Boko Haram reached a three-month ceasefire agreement. Now the military says that it will press ahead with operations against these terrorist groups. It is still unclear whether the ceasefire was active or not.
