Iran War

The United States and Israel are said to have drafted plans for a renewed campaign against Iran for after the US midterms, which take place on 3 November. The New York Times reports that the US and Israel are ramping up military drills ahead of what is hoped to be a “short, but intensive operation”. It is believed targets will include military and nuclear enrichment sites like Pick Axe Mountain but also energy plants.

Iran

Iran deployed artillery and heavy weaponry to Kurdish areas in the west of the country. IRGC forces and military convoys carrying heavy and semi-heavy weapons had been deployed from other provinces to several cities in Iran’s Kurdish region, including Sanandaj, Kamyaran, Sarvabad, Marivan and Baneh. Reports also say the IRGC has deployed several hundred special forces. The IRGC has mobilized thousands of Kurdish fighters aligned with the Iranian regime in Kurdish areas to counter potential attacks by Kurdish opposition groups.

Yemen War

Reports indicate that the Houthi rebels have been blowing up roads and looting homes in rural Taiz. The Houthis have also been erecting military barricades and digging trenches in preparation for the Saudi-led coalition ground assault. There have also been reports of abductions, home raids, and attacks on drinking water sources, disrupting daily life and raising fears of fresh displacement.

The foreign ministers of Türkiye, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt are in Istanbul to discuss regional and international issues, but they will spend significant time discussing the situation in Yemen. Egypt delayed its parliamentary vote on military action in the conflict. Egyptian President al-Sisi said that the proposed deployment would not have an offensive capability, but would be there to defend Saudi Arabia.

Israel

Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at an Israeli military checkpoint near the city of Hebron. The gunmen were killed after a 20-minute gunfight; five people were wounded. The IDF believes that the two were planning a larger attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the immediate closure of Hebron, and preparations are underway for a full lockdown across the West Bank.

Ukraine-Russia War

Russia hit Kyiv with three ballistic missiles that carried cluster munitions. One missile struck Pechersk, the Ukrainian capital’s historic centre, hitting an area between the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Holy Presentation Monastery and damaging religious buildings, homes, shops, cafés, and other civilian infrastructure. Cluster munitions spread over a wider area to inflict maximum damage; however, not all submunitions detonate. They are also meant for Anti-access/area denial. They then become a hazard, as they could be picked up and detonate. In fact, the legacy explosives become a greater issue than the original detonation of the submunitions.

President Trump asked Elon Musk to lift the slowdown restrictions on StarShield. StarShield was working before Musk and Trump spoke earlier on the phone, and rumours and allegations have surrounded it. Previously, Musk said StarShield was US government property and that only Trump and the administration could impose restrictions. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Musk ordered the bandwidth restrictions.  Despite Trump’s assertions, the bandwidth restrictions have not been lifted.

Ukraine expanded its satellite cooperation with Finland after the StarShield slowdown restrictions. Zelensky signed seven agreements with Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, including deals to expand Kyiv’s use of Finnish satellite capabilities through Nokia and ICEYE. The agreements total over €300 million (roughly $337 million). Other deals include railway and energy, as well as agreements that further open areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Germany

A Ukrainian national has been arrested by German authorities on suspicion of spying for Russia. The suspect allegedly used contacts within the European defence industry to obtain sensitive information. The suspect was able to obtain information on the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives, as well as personnel and military facilities at sites used to secure NATO’s eastern flank.

Ethiopia

The leader of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) says the northern state is still at war. The message was aired on television, and Debretsion Gebremichael claimed tactical victories and that the region will “remain a graveyard for its enemies.” Gebremichael claimed that the rebels killed hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers last week in northern and central Tigray. This has not been confirmed.

The Ethiopian government has set up a programme to help former TPLF fighters reintegrate into civilian life. Hundreds of former fighters have been lining up at the Tigray Martyrs’ Memorial Monument in Tigray’s capital, Mekelle, since Wednesday to register.

Afghanistan

Pakistani intelligence and military officials met with the leaders of the armed anti-Taliban groups, according to the New York Times. They discussed possible support for these groups. Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has enjoyed the hospitality and support of the Afghan Taliban. The TTP has used the safe haven of Afghanistan as a launching pad into Pakistan. For Pakistan to hold talks with the anti-Taliban opposition, it would be a tit-for-tat. In late February 2026, Pakistan declared an all-out war on the Afghan Taliban.

South Korea

South Korea offered to hold military talks with North Korea in an attempt to ease tensions and conflicting views on where the inter-Korean border sits. North Korean forces repeatedly cross the military demarcation line to carry out border fortification work, including erecting fences and laying mines. This has been going on for the past couple of years as South Korean lawmakers estimate that North Korea has planted approximately 960,000 land mines in the inter-Korean border since 2024.
