Iran Ceasefire

It has come to light that Mojtaba Khameni is in serious condition after the bombing that killed his father, the previous Supreme Leader. According to reporting from the New York Times, “One leg was operated on three times, and he is awaiting a prosthetic. He had surgery on one hand and is slowly regaining function. His face and lips have been burned severely, making it difficult for him to speak,” it cited the officials as saying, adding that “eventually, he will need plastic surgery.” 

According to an unsourced TV report, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf quit the Iranian negotiating team. The report claims that he stepped down after growing interference from Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps generals. 

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi begins his trip to Islamabad and Moscow. He will be discussing the impact of the war, and it will be interesting to see what comes after his discussions with the Russians. Russia’s involvement in the war has been minor and 

United States

A widely shared email in the Pentagon has been leaked to the press. The e-mail illustrates the anger and frustration sparked by Europe’s response to the Iran War and the Strait of Hormuz. It put forth policy ideas to punish Europe, such as suspending Spain from NATO and changing the US stance on the British Falkland Islands. 

Ukraine

The Ukrainian military has ordered the removal of certain commanders near the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region after photos of starving soldiers were posted on the internet. Shocking images of emaciated troops from the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade were posted online. The General Staff acknowledged this and stated, “Systematic enemy air and missile strikes on crossings over the Oskil River have significantly complicated the logistical support of Defense Forces units in the area.” 

Haiti

A multinational, UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF) is close to deployment in Haiti. The GSF will gradually replace the previous Multinational Mission to Support the Haitian Police (MMAS), which was underfunded and under-equipped. 

Sahel

Niger and Mali are accusing their neighbours of sponsoring terrorism in the region. Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, made the claim, but did not mention any specific countries. Tensions between Mali and Mauritania have increased following cross-border incidents with armed groups. 

Nigeria

Nigeria set up court martial proceedings for the alleged 2025 coup plot. More than 30 Nigerian military officers are implicated in the plot. Six civilians, including retired major general Mohammed Ibrahim Ganal, appeared in court earlier this week on charges linked to conspiracy. 

South Korea-Canada

For the first time, South Korean and Canadian soldiers conducted high-tech military drills in South Korea. The 11-day exercise is underway at the Korea Combat Training Center (KCTC), a facility employing advanced technologies for realistic ground drills, with 44 members of the Canadian Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.
