Mali
In a coordinated effort, JNIM and ethnic Tuaregs launched attacks on Malian military positions nationwide. Mali’s defence chief, Gen. Sadio Camara, was also killed in a town called Kati, near the capital. It is being reported that Tuareg separatists hold the northern city of Kidal. There has been no word from the ruling military junta since this crisis started. General Assimi Goïta, Mali’s junta leader, was present in Kati, and was evacuated in a military convoy to the Samanko camp, a base for the special forces he once commanded.
The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) coalition claims that they were supported by jihadist fighters. Russian fighters confirm that they withdrew from Kidal. Kidal served as the unofficial capital for the Tuareg separatists for a decade and was not under government control until 2023, when Russian mercenaries assisted government forces.
Iran Ceasefire
Iran offered to end the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz if the United States ended its blockade. Iran is not offering to address its nuclear programme, but is simply offering to open the Strait. It is unlikely that the Trump administration will end its blockade of the Strait without concessions from Iran.
Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, rejected Lebanon’s plan for direct talks with Israel. The two countries have been in a state of war since 1948. Qassem vowed not to end hostilities with Israel.
A US Congressional showdown with the Trump administration is due to begin. Military action without congressional approval can occur for only 60 days, and that period is set to expire on 1 May. Trump can impose a 30-day extension, which is likely because he can cite progress and the conflict is under a ceasefire.
Canada
The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires is taking the Canadian government to court after losing its entitlement to the first right of refusal under its contract. Michel Charron, the CEO of the Commissionaires, claims that the company is at risk of losing $330 million a year because of this. The Commissionaires are the largest private sector employer of Canadian veterans.
Afghanistan
Salahuddin Salar, a Tajik commander and former deputy intelligence chief in the Taliban’s defence ministry, said that they pledged allegiance “without seeing their leader” and did not fight for “ethnic supremacy”. Salar posted a video also stating that the intent was to have an Islamic government and not bring the Taliban leadership’s ethnicity to the ruling class. This brings further speculation that ethnic divisions are mounting in Afghanistan.
