US-Canada

Late on Thursday, US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he was terminating trade negotiations with Canada. He cited an ad criticizing tariffs that was taken out by Canada, which he said was “to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts.”

Germany-China

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has postponed his trip to China after a single meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister was confirmed, without any additional meetings. The single meeting with the Chinese side is likely intended as a snub towards the Germans, who have not explicitly rejected Taiwan’s independence.

Lithuania

Lithuania’s president stated that a Russian Su-30 fighter jet and an Il-78 refuelling plane flew approximately 700 meters into Lithuanian airspace from Kaliningrad and remained in Lithuania’s airspace for 18 seconds. A violation of airspace, but not to the extent Russia did a few weeks ago.

Pakistan

Three police officers were killed in an attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A series of blasts targeted their checkpoint. Usually, there are no police officers at this checkpoint, but they were sent after the first explosion. It is suspected that the Pakistani Taliban, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, were responsible for the IED.

UN

It’s UN Day. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations’ founding. The Secretary-General made a statement to make this event. Although the United Nations has been criticized for a litany of reasons, it has done some good in the world. Today, those successes should be remembered.

North Korea

Approximately 20 North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the border city of Paju. They returned to North Korea after warning shots were fired by South Korean soldiers. It is believed that the North Koreans were working in the area, such as clearing land or laying mines in the buffer zone, and likely crossed the border temporarily while working.

Ukraine-Europe

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in London for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. In the afternoon, Zelenskyy will be speaking with European leaders, the so-called “coalition of the willing.” Starmer said the UK’s support for Ukraine is absolute. The prime ministers of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, and Dick Schoof of the Netherlands, as well as NATO chief Mark Rutte, are attending the talks in person.
