Iran Ceasefire

It has come to light that Iran bought a Chinese-made TEE-01B spy satellite and used it to observe and potentially provide targeting for Iranian attacks on US military bases in the Middle East. Coupled with Russian intelligence, this could be why Iranian strikes on US bases were as effective as they were.

A 10-day truce between Israel and Hezbollah takes effect today. This truce will help boost US-Iran peace talks, if they occur this weekend. The two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US will end on 22 May. The glaring issue with the 10-day truce is that Hezbollah did not agree to it – only Israeli and Lebanese officials did.

President Trump claims that Iran has agreed not to have nuclear weapons for 20 years. Trump also claims that Iran is willing to hand over its enriched uranium. Axios is reporting that the US will unfreeze $20 billion of Iranian assets that will be used for food, medicine and infrastructure reconstruction for the uranium.

The International Energy Agency chief stated that Europe has enough jet fuel for the next six weeks. Aviation jet fuel for Europe transits through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz is completely open for all commercial traffic. Iran declared it open after the ceasefire in Lebanon took hold.

United States

A US review panel completed phase one of its examination of over 9 million documents related to the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan. The aim of the review panel is to produce a “transparent and unvarnished” report on the events of August 2021 and the factors behind the rapid collapse of the Afghan government.

Syria

The US continues its drawdown of US forces in Syria, with the US leaving Qasrak Air Base. The US has been moving its forces and equipment from the air base to Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region. According to Syria, 200 US servicemen are still at the base, but are dismantling military jamming and air defense systems and the engineering section at the base.

Niger

For the first time, the Islamic State and al-Qaeda’s affiliate JNIM clashed in Niger near the tri-border area with Mali and Burkina Faso. The two groups are vying for control of the area, which will allow for border crossings into Mali and Burkina Faso and for new recruits and resources.

Ukraine

According to Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy head of Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR), Russia is planning to take the entirety of the Donbas by September. Ukraine still holds twenty percent of the region. Russia is preparing a new ground offensive, but its Spring Offensive still has not broken through.
